Match Reports 2021

 

Bowls Report 9 May 2021

 

 

Under the new dispensation matches are played partly on the home green and partly on the opponent club’s green.  It is your correspondent’s task to sort out who has won and to try to make sense of it all.

Games are played by triples over the usual eighteen ends.

 

27 April Summaries

 

On Tuesday 27 April Brian Watson with Ronald Vaz and Barbara McGillicuddy, playing against Walpole Bay Bowling club at home on the castle green won 22-16.

Brian Reynolds with Patricia Vaz and Philip Andersen won 17-5.

Rosemary Field with Keith Patching and Michael Cunningham won on the last end: 15-14.

 

On Walpole Bay’s green Maggie Dellard with John Taylor and Norman Crawford win 25-10.

Gareth Porter with Maggie Porter and Michael Amura win 17-13.

Keith Dellard with Yvonne Taylor and Martin Hakes won 19-16.

 

The Home teams won all three games and triumphed 54-45.  The Away teams also won all three and overall scored 61-39.

 

Combined score was six-nil in games and 105-84 in shots.

On Thursday 29 April three mixed triples played Broadstairs Bowling club on the Castle green where they won one rink and lost on two, and losing  41-58 in shots.

 

Norman Crawford with Jeanette Crawford and Keith Patching winning 20-14.

Brian Reynolds with J Bridges and Michael Amura led 3-1 on the third end but trailed 3-14 by the eighth.  Despite their efforts in the second half they lost 12-23.

Peter Boeg with Irene Fairall and Fred Goodger lost 9-21.

 

The Away party won two to one in games, and won 53-38 in shots.

 

Gareth Porter with Bob Webb and Christine Smith win 22-9.

Nelson Hamilton with Maggie Porter and Rex Beard won 19-15.

Don Minnett with Yvonne Taylor and Penny Smith t just fell short at 12-14.

 

Overall Whitstable lost 94-96.

On Saturday 1 May three rinks of men from Faversham Bowling club were welcomed on to the Castle green where they were defeated on all three rinks and by 50-37 in shots.

 

Garth Coates with Michael Cunningham and Rex Beard won 19-11.

Brian Reynolds with John Taylor and Norman Toby won 16-12.

Keith Dellard with Malcom Scott and Norman Crawford  scraped a win at 15-13.

 

The party that travelled to Faversham managed to win on just one rink and lost 36-55 in shots.

 

Don Minnett with Phil Andersen and Jude Garland won 17-15.

Gareth Porter with Bob Webb and Ronald Vaz losing 11-14.

Brian Watson with Fred Goodger and Nelson Hamilton lost 8-26.

 

Overall Whitstable lost 86-92.

Summaries

 

 

Another round of the Catherine Wheeler League took place on Saturday 15 May when three teams stayed at home and the other three travelled to the opposition green of Walpole Bay Bowling club.  The stay-at-homes won two of their rinks to one and triumphed 66-41 in shots. The travellers won on one rink but lost the other two.  They tied in shots at 46 each. Overall Whitstable won 112-87.

 Whitstable received eleven league points; Walpole bay received six.

 

On the castle green Bob Davey with Joan Davey and Nicholas Newman won 28-8.

Maggie Dellard with Barbara McGillicuddy and Brian Gentle win 20-11.

Brian Reynolds with Michael Cunningham and Christine Murphy lost the game at 18-22.

 

After only three ends Garth Coates with Maggie Porter and Martin Hakes win at 24-6.

Gareth Porter with John Atkinson and Rosemary Field lost 12-17.

Don Minnett with Tracey and Nelson Hamilton lost 10-23.

On Sunday 16 May three mixed triples from Civil Service Bowling club came to the Castle green where the host club won on two rink and lost on one and prevailed in shots 38-35.

Three mixed triples went away, winning on one rink and losing on two. They lost in shots 32-36. Overall the host club lost by a single shot at 70-71.  The games were played over fifteen ends.

 

Peter Boeg with John Atkinson and Mary Morris win 15-11.

Brian Reynolds with Jean Harman and Philip Andersen winning 13-8.

Keith Patching with Ronald Vaz and Barbara McGillicuddy lost 12-16.

On Tuesday 18 May Whitstable bowling club has its first match of the season in the Forest of Blean League (FOB) and had its first victory over Canterbury Bowling club in the league ever.

 

Three triples of men played at home, winning two rinks to one and by 48-41 shots.

Three triples played away winning on one rink and losing on two and by 39-41 shots.

Overall Whitstable won 87-82 in shots and received five league points against three.

 

At home Brian Reynolds with Nick Newman and John New final victory at 22-13.

Brian Gentle with John Atkinson and Peter Boeg, winning 12-10.

Bob Davey with Keith Patching and Brian Watson lost 14-18.

Away at Canterbury’s green Gareth Porter with Michael Cunningham and Don Minnett won 18-13.

Garth Coates with Martin Hakes and Keith Dellard lost by a single shot at 12-13.

Tony Petts with PJ O’Reilly and Nelson Hamilton lost 9-15.

On the castle green Bob Davey with Joan Davey and Nicholas Newman lost only three ends in their game: they were 10-1 in front on the seventh, 24-4 after fifteen ends and finally won 28-8.

 

Maggie Dellard with Barbara McGillicuddy and Brian Gentle were 1-5 down on the fifth but caught up on the next at 5-all.  They were level again on the eighth end at 6-all, 9-all on the eleventh and 11-all by the thirteenth.  They took all the remaining ends to win 20-11.

 

Brian Reynolds with Michael Cunningham and Christine Murphy led 3-nil on the second but trailed 3-11 after six. They advanced slowly and by the sixteenth took the lead at 18-17. Sadly they lost the last two ends, and with them the game at 18-22.

 

After only three ends Garth Coates with Maggie Porter and Martin Hakes led 8-nil.  They doubled their score by the eleventh at 16-3 and went on to win at 24-6.

 

Gareth Porter with John Atkinson and Rosemary Field were 6-2 after three ends but descended to 6-7 by the seventh.  They nosed ahead on the ninth at 9-7 but it didn’t last; they lost 12-17.

 

Don Minnett with Tracey and Nelson Hamilton went 1-9 down after five ends, 3-13 on the ninth and carried on in this way until they lost 10-23.

Peter Boeg with John Atkinson and Mary Morris led 3-2 after three ends but were 3-6 behind on the sixth.  Two good ends put them 10-6 ahead on the eighth and they hung on to win 15-11.

 

Brian Reynolds with Jean Harman and Philip Andersen had a ding-dong first half and were suitably level at 5-all on the eighth end.  Thereafter they seized the lead, winning 13-8.

 

Keith Patching with Ronald Vaz and Barbara McGillicuddy were 0-8 down on the fourth end and 1-12 adrift by the eighth.  They did a lot better after that but still lost 12-16.

 

Playing away, Keith Dellard with David Lane and Rosemary Field went 7-1 up in four ends but fell behind 7-8 when their opponents got a ’seven’ on the next.  They led again on the seventh at 11-9, then had a blank spell of five ends without a score to be 11-15 down on the twelfth.  Happily they took all the last three ends, winning 16-15.

 

 

Gareth Porter with Linda Lane and Bob Webb and their opponents scored in “leaps-and-ones” in the first half to be level at 4-all on the eighth end.  They got themselves two ahead on the eleventh at 7-5 but then scored just once more, losing by a single shot at 8-9.

 

Don Minnett with Maggie Porter and Ian Palmer were 3-7 down on the seventh end never managed to get in front - the nearest being 7-8 on the eleventh - and finally lost 8-12.

Bob Davey with Keith Patching and Brian Watson were level at 2-all on the fourth end but fell behind thereafter until they lost 14-18.

 

Away at Canterbury’s green Gareth Porter with Michael Cunningham and Don Minnett were evenly matched in the opening ends, being 3-all on the fifth, but then they drew level at 8-all on the tenth and kept control until they won 18-13.

 

Garth Coates with Martin Hakes and Keith Dellard similarly got to 4-all on the sixth end then plunged to 4-10 down after ten.  They lost by a single shot at 12-13.

 

Tony Petts with PJ O’Reilly and Nelson Hamilton led 5-3 on the fifth end, were 5-all on the seventh and 6-all on the half way ninth. From then on it was down hill until they lost 9-15.

 

6 June Summaries 

 

Four triples of ladies entertained four triples from Herne Bay Bowling club on the Castle green on Wednesday afternoon 19 May, when the host club won on one rink and lost on three.  Overall they lost 49-60.

 

Tracy Hamilton with Yvonne Taylor and Maggie Porter o win 14-10.

Rosemary Field with Patricia Vaz and Sue Quilter, losing 14-17.

Maggie Dellard with Jo Bridges and Daphne Ellinor lost 14-18.

Barbara McGillicuddy with Joan Davey and Chris Murphy lost 7-15.

Another Catherine Wheeler League encounter versus Boughton Bowling club was split into Home and Away sessions on 20 May, Thursday, with the home contingent winning on two rinks and losing one and 54-42 in shots.  The triples playing away also won on two rinks and lost the other.  They won 64-37 in shots, so overall Whitstable won 4-2 in rinks and 118-79 in shots. They gained thirteen league points against four.

 

On the Castle green Gareth Porter with Maggie Porter and Rosemary Field win 19-8.

Brian Watson with Nicolas Newman and Barbara McGillicuddy won 18-15.

Brian Gentle with Tracy and Nelson Hamilton lost 9-19.

A Friendly match against New Romney Bowling club between four mixed triples was played on the Castle green on Tuesday 25 May resulting in a defeat of the host club by one rink to three and overall by 66 -74 in shots.

A round of the Heron League, played by pairs of ladies triples took place on Tuesday 1 June when Whitstable and Herne Bay each won a rink but Whitstable lost overall 35-37.

6 June Full Reports

 

Four triples of ladies entertained four triples from Herne Bay Bowling club on the Castle green on Wednesday afternoon 19 May, when the host club won on one rink and lost on three.  Overall they lost 49-60.

 

Tracy Hamilton with Yvonne Taylor and Maggie Porter spent the first half running neck and neck: 2-all on the third end, 3-all on the fifth, 4-all after seven and 5-all on the halfway ninth.  After being 6-all on the eleventh they finally wrested control, going on to win 14-10.

 

Rosemary Field with Patricia Vaz and Sue Quilter took an early substantial lead at 8-1 on the sixth end. By the thirteenth they led 14-6, but then stopped scoring, losing 14-17.

 

Maggie Dellard with Jo Bridges and Daphne Ellinor had the upper hand for the first seven ends to lead 7-4.  The visitors then got a’six’ on the next: 7-10. From then on the home side were trailing and they lost 14-18.

 

Barbara McGillicuddy with Joan Davey and Chris Murphy were level at 3-all on the fourth end but by the eleventh they hadn’t scored and they were 3-11 down.  They picked up a few shots in the closing ends but nowhere near enough; they lost 7-15.

On the Castle green Gareth Porter with Maggie Porter and Rosemary Field led 6-1 by the seventh and 8-4 on the half way ninth.  They kept their grip on proceedings to win 19-8.

 

Brian Watson with Nicolas Newman and Barbara McGillicuddy lost the first two ends but bounced back to lead 10-2 on the seventh.  They won 18-15.

 

Brian Gentle with Tracy and Nelson Hamilton lost the first three ends 0-4 and never came close to catching up: they lost 9-19.

 

Away at Boughton Don Minnett with Christine Murphy and Keith Dellard ran up thirteen shots in the first four ends to lead 13-nil.  They got a near-maximum ’eight’ on the ninth and finally won with a twenty-shot margin at 31-11.

 

Garth Coates with Penny Smith and Keith Patching led 9-2 on the seventh end and retained control until they won 21-9.

 

Brian Reynolds with John Atkinson and Maggie Dellard were 5-nil up on the fourth but fell behind on the tenth at 8-9.  They dropped back steadily to lose 12-17.

Garth Coates with Sue Quilter and Philip Andersen took an early lead, including a ‘seven’ on the fourth end to go 9-1 up.  By the tenth their lead had been reduced to a couple of shots at 11-9 but a ‘five’ on the next set them up again: they won 28-12.

 

Norman Toby with Jeanette Crawford and Ronald Vaz scored only twice in the first seven ends to trail 2-13. They made slow progress, losing 14-25.

 

Norman Crawford with Fred Goodger and Penny Smith scored just once in the first half to be 1-15 down on the ninth end.  They rallied a bit from then on but not enough to avoid losing 13-22.

 

PJ O’Reilly with Patricia Vaz and Daphne Ellinor lost the first two ends but were nearly caught up on the sixth end at 4-5.  Sadly, after another six ends they hadn’t scored at all, lying 4-18 down on the twelfth.  They managed to get into double figures on the last end, losing 11-20.

Barbara McGillicuddy with Patricia Vaz and Penny Smith lost the first three ends 0-4, drew level on the next, 4-all then won the next six ends, including a ‘six’ on the seventh, to lead17-4 on the tenth.  They dried up for four ends to be 17-12 after fourteen but then took the rest, winning 24-12.

 

Maggie Dellard with Irene Fairall and Chris Murphy won the first two ends 2-1 but were caught on the next 2-all and by the thirteenth were 3-19 behind.  They finally lost 11-25.

Maggie Dellard with Nelson Hamilton and Michael Amura were 0-6 down after three ends.  They were 4-6 adrift by the sixth and well behind on the tenth at 4-15.  A ‘five’ on the next cheered them up and they continued their up-hill fight to tie at 18-all.

 

Gareth Porter with Maggie Porter and Martin Hakes lost the first three ends 0-5 and were behind for the rest of the game, losing 11-14.

 

Brian Reynolds with Nicholas Newman and Christine Murphy led 8-1 on the fifth end but fell behind on the ninth at 8-9.  They were 9-14 on the fifteenth before losing 11-15.

 

Brian Watson with Keith Dellard and Barbara McGillicuddy were level at 4-all on the third but slipped to 8-9 down on the sixth.  Eight unproductive ends later they trailed 8-23, finally losing at 13-16.

Another successful Catherine Wheeler League encounter for six mixed triples against Westbrook Bowling club on Tuesday 8 June winning five rinks to one and overall 118-84; receiving fifteen league points two.

 

Don Minnett with Michael Amura and Rosemary Field made a good start, 11-1 by the fifth end and 18-3 by the ninth.  After steadily acquiring shots they won 27-8(eight).

 

Garth Coates with Tracy Hamilton and Christine Murphy, after a good start were caught 5-all on the sixth and were again level on the eighth at 7-all.  They dropped behind for a few ends to go 9-10 down on the twelfth but recovered to take all but two of the remaining ends, winning 19-11.

 

Maggie Dellard with PJ O’Reilly and Brian Reynolds were 0-3 down on the second end but levelled on the fifth at 3-all, then got a ‘four’ to lead 7-3 on the sixth.  Four ends later they were struggling at 7-12 on the tenth before gradually catching up to win 19-15.

 

Brian Watson with Nicholas Newman and Barbara McGillicuddy were running more or less neck and neck over the early ends to be 4-3 up on the fifth.  The opponents then got a ‘seven’, leaving the Whitstable team well behind at 4-10 on the sixth.  Fortunately they won the next five ends to lead 17-10. They were caught 18-all on the sixteenth but won the last two ends, taking the match 21-18.

 

Bob Davey with Joan Davey and Keith Dellard lost the first three ends 0-5 and remained behind for fifteen ends to be 12-14 down.  They took two of the last three ends to win by a single shot at 18-17.

 

Gareth Porter with Maggie Porter and Martin Hakes went 9-nil ahead in five ends but were only one ahead after another five at 9-8.  They fell behind on the thirteenth at 10-11, but almost caught up, losing by a single shot at 14-15.

A Ladies Friendly match against Herne Bay Bowling club was saved from a complete whitewash on the last end on rink four, giving a single shot victory to Whitstable on that rink. They lost one rink to five and overall 72-127.

22 June Full Reports

Daphne Ellinor with Irene Fairall and Sue Quilter were leading 5-2 on the sixth end but were caught 6-all on the eighth.  With only one shot won in the next seven ends they were out of contention at 7-20 on the fifteenth, going on to lose 12-23.

 

Maggie Dellard with Jean Harman and Yvonne Taylor were 3-6 down on the seventh but 9-6 up on the eleventh.  The opposition got a ’seven’ on the twelfth and the Whitstable side took only one of the remaining ends, losing 11-24.

Another round of the Heron League was played on Wednesday 9 June against Canterbury Bowling club when Whitstable lost on one rink and tied the other, losing overall 28-39.

Whitstable received one league point, Canterbury received five points.

 

Maggie Dellard with Yvonne Taylor and Maggie Porter did not start well, taking five ends to get scoring at 2-4 on the fifth and being 3-9 down on the halfway ninth.  They were more productive in the second half, achieving a tie at 14-all.

 

Barbara McGillicuddy with Patricia Vaz and Chris Murphy found themselves 3-15 behind after seven ends and were 4-16 down on the ninth.  They finally lost 14-25.

Catherine Wheeler League time again, Whitstable Bowling club played Walpole Bay Bowling club winning four rinks to two and by 108-94 overall.  They received thirteen league points to four.

 

Brian Gentle with Nicholas Newman and Rosemary Field led 5-nil on the fifth end and 12-2 by the ninth, scoring ’five’ on that end.  The sides were more evenly matched in the second half but Whitstable still won 21-11.

 

Martin Hakes with Maggie Porter and Don Minnett went 7-2 up in half a dozen ends, then got a ’six’ on the eighth, so by the halfway ninth they were comfortably placed at 14-4.  They kept a grip on the game, which they won at 19-12.

 

Bob Davey with Joan Davey and Tracy Hamilton were 10-nil in front after only four ends.  Ten ends later they scored their last at 21-5, then crumbled until the end.  Fortunately they had enough in reserve to win 21-16.

 

Gareth Porter with Linda Lane and Keith Patching didn’t start well, being 2-6 down on the fifth end and finishing the first half at 4-11 on the ninth. After trailing along for most of the second half they drew level on the fourteenth with a ‘six’ to be 14-all, after which they won three of the last four ends to win 20-16.

 

Brian Watson with Michael Cunningham and Barbara McGillicuddy took all but one of the opening ends to lead 15-1 on the eighth.  After that they lost their touch, didn’t score again, losing 15-17.

 

Brian Reynolds with Bob Webb and Daphne Ellinor, after winning the first two ends 4-nil were 4-8 down on the sixth, then 5-15 after ten.  They finally lost at 12-22.

On Tuesday 15 June Whitstable bowling club played against six mixed rinks from Petts Wood bowling club winning on four rinks and losing on two.  Overall they won 90-75.

 

Brian Reynolds with Patricia Vaz, Jeanette Crawford and Neil Shaw were 1-3 down on the third end but drew level on the fourth at 3-all and led 12-3 by the eighth.  They kept control to win 19-8

 

Michael Cunningham with Philip Andersen, Irene Fairall and Jude Garland had a low scoring first half and evenly matched being level at 5-all on the eighth of eighteen ends.  They doubled their total over the next two ends, and then went on to win 17-10.

 

Keith Patching with Linda Lane, Fred Goodger and Yvonne Taylor were 4-2 up on the fourth end but failed to score on the next six ends to trail 4-10 on the tenth.  Over the next eight ends, all of which they won, they levelled at 10-all on the thirteenth, then took the lead on the next before winning 16-13.

 

Maggie Dellard with John Taylor, Jo Bridges and Mike Amura were 8-nil up in five ends, 9-6 in ten and finally won 15-11.

 

Norman Crawford with Margaret Morris, Sue Quilter and Ronald Vaz were fairly evenly matched lying 5-all on the seventh, 9-10 on the twelfth and 13-12 by the fourteenth.  Sadly they scored on just one of the remaining ends, losing 14-17.

 

David Lane with Jean Harman, Norman Toby and Daphne Ellinor were 3-all on the fifth end but dropped behind on the ninth at 3-9.  They didn’t score very often, losing 9-16.

On Thursday 24 June the traditional clash between teams led by the club President, Brian Gentle and the club Captain, Brian Reynolds was played on the castle green.  Rink honours were shared at three apiece but overall the Captain’s teams won 108-91.

 

Leading team for the President, the P-team: Rosemary Field with Ian Palmer and Keith Patching were up against the Captain’s C-team: Barbara McGillicuddy with Andrew Brown and Brian Watson.  The P-team lost the first two ends and fell well behind at 2-8 after the C-team got a ‘six’ on the fourth end.  P-team reclaimed the lead on the sixth with a ‘five’ to go 9-8 up, but then they were caught 9-all on the next.  They built up a lead over the next few ends which they kept until they won 21-13.  

 

A P-team skipped by Thomas Attaway with Jo Bridges, Sue Quilter and John New lost the first two ends but recouped to lead the C-team of Nelson Hamilton with Irene Fairall, Fred Goodger and Philip Andersen 6-2 on the sixth end.  They were 7-5 up on the tenth, then fell behind for a few ends until drawing level at 9-all on the thirteenth.  P-team took four of the remaining ends to win 15-10.

 

A P-team skipped by Bob Davey with Joan Davey, Ann French and Neil Shaw led most of the first half against the C-team: Don Minnett with Maggie and Gareth Porter and Michael Amura, who drew level on the eighth at 10-all.  However, the P-team resumed and kept control, winning 18-16.

 

Brian Gentle with Michael Cunningham, Patricia Vaz and Bob Webb formed a P-team which won the first end, but then trailed the C-team of Brian Reynolds with Jean harman, Norman Tilley and Christine Murphy until the C-team won 21-13.

 

C-team consisting of PJ O’Reilly with Rex Beard, Maggie Dellard and Tracy Hamilton trailed for eight ends behind P-team Norman Crawford with Jeanette Crawford, Penny Smith and David Lane until a ‘five’ on the ninth gave them the lead at 9-7.  The C-team scored heavily in the second half to win at 25-12.

 

A C-team of Keith Dellard with Linda Lane and Nicholas Newman led 8-1 on the sixth end against the P-team of Peter Boeg with Ronald Vaz and Daphne Ellinor, who, in turn, got ahead on the ninth at 11-8.  The C-team took all but one of the remaining ends, winning 23-12.

In the Pairs competition Tracy Hamilton and Maggie Porter, winning 16-7(seven).

Brian Gentle with Nick Newman and Peter Boeg got a ‘five’ on the fourth, 7-1 and then achieved a ‘six’ on the eighth to lead 13-5.  They were caught 13-all on the thirteenth but won more of the remaining ends to win 18-15.

 

Playing away Tony Petts with Keith Patching and Neil Shaw trailed in the first half to lie 5-10 down on the ninth.  They were more successful in the second half, winning 18-15.

 

Thomas Attaway with Martin Hakes and John New were 2-all on the third, 2-3 on the fourth and 8-3 up on eighth.  The opposition then got an ‘eight’ and after that they had to work hard before winning 19-13.

 

Gareth Porter with Michael Cunningham and Don Minnett were 4-1 on the fifth end, 11-2 on the eleventh and 13-4 on the fifteenth.  They failed to score again but still won 13-9.

Bob Davey with Joan Davey and Rex Beard were 2-10 behind on the seventh end and 3-11 adrift by the ninth.  They then won six ends, taking them into the lead at 14-11 on the fifteenth.  They were level pegging on the seventeenth, 14-all, then took the last end for a single shot win 15-14.

 

John New with Margaret Morris and Ronald Vaz had a poor start being 2-10 down on the eighth end. By the fifteenth they were 3-22 and finally lost 7-26.

On Sunday 4 July three triples of men and one of ladies played against four similar teams from Lenham Bowling club in a ‘Friendly’ match, in which Whitstable won on one of the men’s rinks and all else was lost.  The men lost overall 51-57.

 

Keith Dellard with Ian Palmer and Ronald Vaz led 6-2 on the fifth end and advanced to 15-3 on the halfway ninth.  They got a’five’ on the thirteenth to lead 21-8 but had sufficient shots in hand not to be worried when their opponents got a ‘six’ on the fifteenth at 22-14.  They won 24-10.

 

Neil Shaw with Norman Tilley and Brian Gentle led 4-1 after four ends and by halfway were 9-3 in front on the ninth.  By the twelfth they had been caught 9-all but took the lead again and were 13-9 up on the fourteenth.  The opposition then got nine shots in the last three ends, leaving the Whitstable side defeated 14-18.

 

Brian Watson with Bob Webb and Trevor Epps lost the first five ends to go 0-12 down.  They began to score, being 5-13 down on the ninth and eventually getting to a total of thirteen shots, but their opponents had gotten a ‘five’ on the twelfth and the Whitstable men lost 13-21.

Don Minnett with Sue Quilter and Trevor Epps lost the first three ends 0-4 but led 6-4 by the sixth.  They kept control until they were overtaken on the fifteenth at 10-13, finally losing 11-15.

Playing away, Neil Shaw with Martin Hakes, Peter Boeg and Norman Crawford hit their peak on the third end at 5-2.  Thereafter they were trailing,  8-10 on the eighth became 8-30 on the seventeenth and they finally lost 10-33.

On Wednesday 14 July three triples of ladies took on three from Canterbury Bowling club in a match billed as a ‘friendly’ in which the Whitstable club won on two rinks and tied the third. Overall they won 57-37.

 

Tracy Hamilton with Linda Lane and Jo Bridges didn’t start too well, 1-5 down on the fifth, then 2-8 on the ninth.  In the second half they came alive, getting a ’five’ on the twelfth and again on the fourteenth and generally overwhelming the opposition and winning 21-10.

 

Maggie Porter with Ann French and Joan Davey led 6-1 on the fourth end and 11-3 on the ninth.  They carried on like this until they won 21-12.

 

Rosemary Field with Angela Amura and Daphne Ellinor went 1-3 on the fourth end, caught up at 3-all on the fifth but fell behind again to be 3-9 down on the eighth.  They stayed behind until the last end, when they drew level again to force a tie at 15-all.

On Saturday 17 July the South-East divisional Quarter-Finals of the Women’s Top Club competition took place against Folkestone Park Bowling club; Whitstable won three of the four games and scored 63-52 shots and won three points to one.

 

In the Fours Rosemary Field with Linda Lane, Penny Smith and Chris Murphy were 1-3 down on the third end but led 11-3 by the eighth.  They kept a healthy lead until they won 18-9(nine).

 

In the Triples Barbara McGillicuddy with Joan Davey and Daphne Ellinor won the first two 3-nil but by the fifth were 3-7 behind.  They got in front on the eighth at 8-7 and managed to hold on until they finally won 19-11.

 

In the Pairs Tracy Hamilton and Maggie Porter had a ding-dong encounter, 3-all on the fourth, 4-all on the sixth, 6-all on the halfway ninth, 7-all on the eleventh and 9-all after thirteen ends.  They won the majority of the remaining ends to win 16-11.

 

In the Singles Maggie Dellard led 7-2 after six ends, then got stuck for half a dozen ends to trail 7-16 on the twelfth. She scored only on one more end, losing 10-21.

Whitstable Bowling club played a‘friendly’ match against Plumstead Bowling club on Sunday 18 July between mixed triples when the host club won on four rinks, lost on one and tied on one.

 

Keith Patching with Linda Lane and Rex Beard got a ‘five’ on the fifth to go 9-2 up and they led 15-4 on the ninth.  In the second half they got a ‘six’ and a ‘seven’ on the fifteenth and sixteenth ends giving them victory at 33-8(eight).

 

Peter Boeg with Irene Fairall and Trevor Epps were level at 2-all on the third and 5-all on the eighth end.  They doubled their score with a’five’ on the ninth and proceeded to pile up shots, including a ‘six’ on the fifteenth until they won 24-9(nine).

 

Brian Watson with Tracy Hamilton and PJ O’Reilly were 3-all on the fifth end then scored  heavily on the next few ends, including a ’six’ on the ninth to go ahead 15-3.  They finished with a ’five’ and a ‘three’ to win 26-13.

 

Norman Crawford with Fred Goodger and Barbara McGillicuddy lost the first end but they led 12-1 by the seventh.  The match was slightly less one-sided in the second half but they still won 21-11.

 

Michael Cunningham with Jean Harman and Philip Andersen had a poor start, trailing 5-12 by the ninth end.  They gradually closed the gap until they were dead level on the last end, achieving a tie at 16-all.

 

Brian Gentle with Janette Crawford and David Lane also had a poor start, being 2-13 down on the seventh end and 3-15 on the eleventh.  They managed to get into double figures, losing 10-20.

On Tuesday 20 July another Forest of Blean League (FOB) round was played at two centres, home and away, against Canterbury Bowling club in which Whitstable bowling club won on two rinks and lost on the other four.  Overall they lost 86-88 receiving two league points out of the eight available.

 

At home Tony Petts with Keith Patching and Peter Boeg exchanged the lead a few times in a low-scoring first half to be level at 7-all on the ninth end.  They got a grip after that, winning 20-14.

 

Gareth Porter with Michael Cunningham and Don Minnett had a poor start, being 2-7 down on the seventh end, then 4-10 behind after eleven.  They finally lost 8-15.

 

Brian Watson with Martin Hakes and Brian Gentle led 3-1 on the fourth end but declined to 3-17 by the tenth.  There being no way back, they lost 8-22.

 

Playing away Thomas Attaway with PJ O’Reilly and John New, after being 1-3 down on the third, took the lead on the next at 5-3 and never looked back. They were 8-4 on the seventh, 11-5 on the ninth and 19-6 after fourteen ends.  They won 25-7(seven).

 

Bob Davey with Nick Newman and Keith Dellard were 5-3 up on the sixth end, then the home side got a ‘seven’ on the seventh and the Whitstable side was struggling at 5-13 on the ninth.  After valiant efforts they fell short, losing 14-16.

 

Brian Reynolds with Bob Webb and Michael Amura took the first five ends unchallenged to lead 6-nil, but by the ninth they were 6-9 behind and they never caught up, losing 11-14.
