Match Reports 2024

On Tuesday 26 September six mixed triples tangled with a similar contingent from Chislet bowling club.  Whitstable prevailed five to one in rinks (was nearly a whitewash) and by 117-71 overall.

 

 

Dave Elliot with Irene Fairall and Daphne Ellinor began well and got better.  They led 3-1 on the third end and 20-2 by the thirteenth!  They finally won 25-6(six).

 

Maggie Dellard with Keith Dellard and Ken Burton took the first five ends 11-0 and by the halfway ninth led 15-2.  They were nip and tuck in the second half but were victorious at 23-11.

 

Nelson Hamilton with Yvonne Taylor and Fiona Hallows won the first seven ends unchallenged to be 12-0 up on the eighth.  Chislet did better in the second half but Whitstable won 22-14.

 

Tracy Hamilton with Dawn Hammond and Christopher Middle were level on the sixth end at 4-all but by the eleventh they led 13-4.  They stopped scoring for five ends and were nearly caught on the sixteenth at 13-12 but fortunately they got the last two ends, winning 16-12.

 

Brian Watson with Sandra Williams and John French began well and led 9-1 on the seventh end.   They kept control until they led 17-9 on the fifteenth then they stopped scoring and were lucky to have enough shots in reserve to win at 17-15.

 

Norman Crawford with Janette Crawford and Christine Murphy also started well to lead 8-2 on the eighth end.  By the tenth they were 11-4 to the good but then they stopped scoring and found themselves 11-14 behind on the fourteenth.   They won all the last four ends but couldn’t quite get enough shots to avoid defeat by a single shot at 14-15 thus missing out on a whitewash.

Whitstable Bowling club Match Reports 26 September 2023

 

The last game this season of the Heron League was contested on Boughton bowling club’s green on Thursday 14 September.  The two triples of ladies won on one rink and tied on the other.  Overall Whitstable won 42-26 and received four league points of the six available.

 

Tracy Hamilton with Maggie Porter and Andrea Lippett were 6-2 up on the fourth end then got a ‘six’ on the next to lead 12-2.  They kept on piling up shots, they led 15-4 on the ninth, and eventually won 26-10.

 

Barbara McGillicuddy with  Karen West and Chris Murphy were 6-2 up on the third end, were caught 7-all on the ninth and led 13-7 on the thirteenth. They failed to score for four ends and fell behind 13-16 on the next to last end; fortunately they recovered enough to get a ‘three’ on the last end, thus achieving a tied finish at 16-all.

The ‘friendly’ match against Kearsney bowling club was all the more so because one of our skips had to drop out with a knee problem and three of the visitors were absorbed into home teams to make sure everyone got a game, one of them actually skipped a home team!

Rink honours were shared at two per club. The games were curtailed to about a dozen ends.

 

Freda Smith (standing in for Ray McDonald) with Jo Bridges and Christine Smith played twelve ends; they were level on 4-all on the sixth but dominated the second half, winning 15-10.

 

Don Minnett with Rex Beard and Barbara McGillicuddy were 1-5 down on the fourth end but drew level on the fifth at 5-all only to fall back again on the seventh at 5-11.  Then they took all the remaining ends to win by a single shot at 12-11.

 

Brian Watson with Kaye Cox, Martin Hakes and David Gavin were well behind on the halfway sixth end at 3-8 before losing 7-10 on the final twelfth end.

 

Brian Gentle with Angela Amura and Mike Amura played fourteen ends.  They were level on the sixth at 5-all then fell steadily behind until they lost 10-15

Whitstable Bowling club Match Reports 19 September 2023

 

 

On Tuesday 5 September six mixed rinks from Southill Wood bowling club played against six mixed teams from Whitstable bowling club on the Castle green where each club won on three rinks and lost on three but overall Whitstable won 95-84.

 

 

 

George Cook with Norman Tilley, John Noble and Daphne Ellinor monopolised the first half, leading 10-1 on the ninth end; they were almost as overwhelming in the second half, winning the game at 21-4(four).

 

Don Minnett with Maggie Porter, Joan Davey and Norman Crawford were 6-0 up on the fourth end and they were 15-2 in front on the ninth.  They relaxed a little in the second half but still won 22-9.

 

Dave Elliot with Deborah Doyle, Christopher Middle and Barbara McGillicuddy were 3-all on the fourth, 4-all by the sixth but were behind on the ninth at 6-8.  Winning the next five ends put them in front 20-8 on the fourteenth and they went on to win 21-14.

 

Brian Reynolds with Ken Gilmore, Irene Fairall and Jude Garland followed along behind in the early ends but caught up on seventh at 4-all and by the halfway ninth were just in front 6-5. After thirteen they were 12-6 ahead but sadly stopped scoring, thus losing 12-14.

 

Gareth Porter with Jo Bridges, Ian Palmer and PJ O’Reilly won only three of the first eleven ends to be 3-13 down on the eleventh.  They were better in the second half but still lost 11-16.

 

Ray McDonald with Jim Hatton, Rex Beard and Christine Murphy had a bleak first half trailing 2-13 on the eighth end.  By the thirteenth they were down 8-15, never scored again losing 8-26.

On Friday 2 August five mixed triples representing Eastbourne bowling club were the hosts of Whitstable bowling club, playing away, from which encounter the visiting club emerged with no rinks won!  Overall they lost 62-104.

 

Closest were Mike Amura with Rhiannon Turner and Norman Tilley.  They were 1-8 down on the fourth end but by the eleventh they led 12-10 and kept it up to the seventeenth at 17-16.  Unfortunately the Eastbourne team took the last end leaving Whitstable defeated by a single shot at 17-18.

 

Jude Garland with Angela Amura and John Taylor dominated the first half of the game, leading 13-2 by the tenth end.  They then experienced five blank ends to trail 13-15 on the fifteenth before drawing level on the seventeenth at 15-all.  Sadly they lost the last end and the game at 15-17.

 

Tracy Hamilton with Finnerton and Mike Brain were nearly always neck and neck in their game, 3-4 on the fifth end, 7-8 on the seventh, 12-13 after fourteen and 13-14 by the sixteenth.  Losing the last two ends left them defeated 13-20.

 

Norman Crawford with John French and Barbara McGillicuddy were 0-6 down on the fifth end and 1-10 behind on the eighth.  They scored little and not very often, losing 7-21.

 

Brian Watson with Nelson Hamilton and Daphne Ellinor were 2-all on the fourth end then found themselves 2-12 adrift after the opposition got a ‘five’ on two ends. By half way they trailed 3-17 then got a ‘six’ which cheered them up a little, but not for long as they suffered five ends stuck on ‘eleven’ to be 11-27 down on the fifteenth.  They finally lost 13-30.

Wednesday 23 August was the day of the match between mixed triples from Whitstable and Deal bowling clubs on Deal’s green where Whitstable won on four rinks and lost on two; overall they won at 119-81.

 

 

Ray McDonald with Rex Beard and Karen West were level at 4-all on the seventh end then just ahead at 6-5 on the ninth.  They began the second half with a magnificent ‘seven’ to be 13-5 in front on the tenth and they just took the game in hand until they won 26-11.

 

Brian Watson with M Doyle and Daphne Ellinor were 5-1 up on the fourth end but by the eighth they were level at 5-all.   Thereafter they took all but two of the second half ends, winning 22-7.

 

Keith Dellard with John Taylor and Barbara McGillicuddy had a poor start, they were 1-7 down on the sixth end but then got a grip and by the ninth they led 8-7.  Winning all but three of the remaining ends they claimed victory at 21-11.

 

Brian Reynolds with Martin Markey and Andrea Lippett trailed for most of the first half but grabbed the lead on the eighth end at 8-6.  They fell behind again and were down 8-13 by the eleventh but a ‘five’ on the twelfth and a ‘six’ on the sixteenth helped to secure victory at 21-17.

 

Dave Elliot with Norman Toby and John Noble were level at 4-all on the fifth, dropped to 4-8 on the sixth and then drew level again on the tenth at 8-all.  By the twelfth they were behind again at 8-10 but once more wrested the lead at 12-11 on the sixteenth only to lose 13-15.

 

Bob Davey with Joan Davey and Ian Palmer led 3-1 on the fourth but went behind to be 3-14 down on the ninth.  They had the upper hand in the second half but it wasn’t quite enough to avoid defeat at 16-20.

On Friday 15 September two triples of ladies from Whitstable bowling club visited Herne Bay bowling club for another round of the Heron League.  Each club won on one rink but overall Whitstable won 36-31, receiving four league points against two.

 

 

Tracy Hamilton with Fi Hallows and Daphne Ellinor led 4-1 on the fourth end but were behind on the sixth at 4-6.  They gained the lead on the tenth at 10-9 and then won all but one of the remaining ends until they won 22-10.

 

Barbara McGillicuddy with Maggie Porter and Chris Murphy led 8-1 on the fifth end but were caught 10-all on the twelfth.  Sadly they scored just once more, losing 14-21.

On Wednesday 13 September six mixed triples from Thanet bowling club arrived on the Castle green for another round of the Catherine Wheeler League where the host club won on four rinks and lost on two and also won overall by 119-80, receiving seventeen league points.

 

 

Mike Amura with Penny Smith and Norman Crawford led 10-2 on the eighth end. They were 10-8 up on the tenth, then 23-8 ahead on the fifteenth, after which they coasted to victory at 27-11.

 

Brian Watson with Bob Webb and Daphne Ellinor lost the first two ends and were behind until levelling on the eleventh at 10-all with a ‘five’.  They took all but one of the last few ends winning at 20-11.

 

Gareth Porter with Maggie Porter and Dave Elliot were 2-4 down on the second end but were leading throughout the rest of the game, winning 25-16.

 

Bob Davey with Joan Davey and Nelson Hamilton held the lead in a generally low scoring game which they won 21-12.

 

Ray McDonald with PJ O’Reilly and Christine Murphy had a close game which they lost by a single shot at 14-15.

 

Don Minnett with Barbara McGillicuddy and Martin Hakes had a similar game, losing 12-15.

Whitstable Bowling club Match Reports 12 September 2023

 

 

On Wednesday 30 August two triples of ladies from Chislet bowling club came to the Castle green for another round of the Ladies Heron League.  Sadly the host club lost on both rinks and overall at 25-40, gaining no league points at all.  

 

Tracy Hamilton with Fiona Hallows and Christine Murphy were 1-5 down on the fourth end but led 8-5 on the sixth.  By the eleventh they were just ahead at 10-9 but then had a few blank ends to trail 10-17 on the fifteenth.  It was too big a margin; they lost 15-18.

 

Maggie Dellard with Deborah Doyle and Barbara McGillicuddy lost the first two ends 0-5 and just never caught up.  They were behind 10-13 on the twelfth but didn’t score again, losing 10-22.

On Thursday 31 August two triples of ladies traveled to play faversham in the Heron league. Both teams lost their games and lost overall at 26-33 gaining no league points.

 

 

Maggie Dellard with Joan Davey and Daphne Ellinor were fairly evenly matched over the first half: 3-all on the third, 6-all on the seventh and 7-all on the halfway ninth. They stopped scoring for five ends to go  7-12 down on the thirteenth and they finally lost 11-14.

 

Barbara McGillicuddy with Maggie Porter and Christine Murphy led 5-1 on the fifth end and they stayed in front until they dropped back to trail 9-11 when the opposition got a ‘five’ on the twelfth.  They struck back to lead 14-11 on the fourteenth and they remained in the lead until the home side got a ‘six’ on the last end, inflicting defeat at 15-19.

On Saturday 26 August five mixed rinks from Corringham and Fobbing bowling club visited the Castle green where the host club won on three rinks and lost on one with one tied.  Overall they won at 92-86.

 

 

Maggie Dellard with Linda Lane, Norman Tilley and Keith Dellard were 1-3 down on the fourth end but by the eleventh led 15-3.  They kept a firm grip on the game, winning at 24-10.

 

Ray McDonald with Irene Fairall, Janette Crawford and Keith Patching were 5-2 in front on the fifth end but had crumbled to 5-9 down on the eighth.  They fought their way back to be level at 10-all by the eleventh.  Then they took five of the last six ends to win at 22-15.

 

Brian Watson with Debbie Rivers, David Lane and Martin Hakes took seven of the first eight ends to lead 13-3.  They relaxed their grip on the game a bit in the second half, being only two shots ahead on the sixteenth at 19-17; however by winning the last two ends they secured victory at 22-17.

 

Norman Toby with M Pritchard, Jo Bridges and Christopher Hallows led 6-2 after six ends but trailed 6-13 by the eleventh.  They caught up on the seventeenth at 16-15 before achieving a tie at 16-all.

 

Norman Crawford with Fiona Hallows, Philip Bassenger and Yvonne Taylor were level on the fourth end at 3-all but rapidly fell behind, they were 8-13 down on the thirteenth and didn’t score again, losing at 8-28.

Whitstable Bowling club Match Reports 29 August 2023.

 

 

 

On Tuesday 22 August five mixed rinks from St Chads bowling club visited the Castle green where the host club won on all five rinks and overall 81-47.

 

 

Brian Watson with John Taylor and Penny Smith lost the first two ends 0-2 but then opened their account with a maximum possible ‘nine’, informally known as a  ‘Hot-shot’.  They carried on, scoring at more reasonable rate; they were 14-4 ahead on the ninth, 15-6 after twelve ends and were finally winners at 23-8(eight).

 

Martin Hakes with Angie Amura and Yvonne Taylor were 5-1 up on the fifth end, 11-2 on the ninth and 12-4 after eleven.  They won handsomely at 19-7(seven).

 

Christopher Hallows with Jo Bridges and Christine Murphy were 5-1 on the fourth end, 5-4 on the sixth and 9-6 on the tenth.  They continued to dominate until they finally won 14-9(nine).

 

Keith Patching with Norman Tilley and Deborah Doyle didn’t have a very good start, being 1-6 down on the fourth end and 2-7 by the sixth.  They caught up on the ninth at 7-all then slowly ground out a score shot by shot until they won by a single shot at 14-13.

 

Mike Amura with Mavis Birch and Rex Beard were more or less neck and neck for the first half but they had a bit of an edge in the second, they were 10-5 on the twelfth for example but they finally won by a single shot at 11-10.

On Thursday 24 August six mixed rinks from Gravesend Vets bowling club visited what became a very soggy Castle green and played a  ‘friendly’ match that was curtailed by rain.  Each club won on three rinks but the host club lost overall by the smallest margin at 77-78.

 

 

Ray McDonald with Irene Fairall, Jo Bridges and Christopher Hallows were nip and tuck for the first few ends, 1-2 on the third, 4-3 on the fifth and 5-6 after seven.  They then took all but two of the rest of the ends to win 18-8.

 

Brian Watson with Mike Doyle, Rita Hall and Christopher Middle went from 0-2 on the second to 4-2 on the fourth and to 7-3 by the sixth.  They kept the opposition pinned down and won 18-8.

 

Nelson Hamilton with Fiona Hallows, Michael Blaquiere and Tracy Hamilton led 11-2 after seven ends much helped by having got a ‘five’ on the fourth.  They managed to complete thirteen ends before the rain, winning 15-7.

 

Brian Gentle with Sally White, Paul Salway and Christine Murphy won the first end but then went half a dozen ends without a sniff of a shot to trail 1-11 down on the seventh end. They managed to get to 3-12 on the tenth before claiming the last remaining ends, only to lose the game by a single shot at 11-12.

 

David Lane with Norman Tilley, Jim Hatton and Yvonne Taylor got a ‘five’ on the third end which gave them a lead that they kept until caught 10-all on the eleventh.  The visitors then also got a ‘five’ as the game was washed out leaving the home side defeated 10-15.

 

Keith Dellard with Sandra Williams, Dawn Hammond and Ken Burton were 1-7 down on the fourth end, 4-14 adrift on the seventh and 5-14 on the eighth.  They scored no more, losing 5-28.

Whitstable Bowling club Match Reports 22 August 2023

 

 

On Saturday 12 August Whitstable bowling club played against six mixed triples from Istead Rise bowling club, winning on two rinks and losing on three with one tied.  Overall they they lost 87-102.  

 

 

Trevor Epps with Debbie Rivers and Christopher Hallows led 9-1 after seven ends and 17-4 by the fourteenth.  The opposition then got stuck in and took the last few ends, including a ‘six’ on the sixteenth but Whitstable’s total shots gave them a win at 18-16.

 

Tracy Hamilton with Rhiannon Turner and Philip Bassenger were 6-0 on the fifth end and 11-3 on the ninth.  They got to 17-6 on the fourteenth, then stopped scoring for the last five ends and they were lucky to win 17-15.

 

Brian Watson with Sheila Upjohn and John Nichols were level on the sixth at 4-all and led 9-5 by the ninth.  They hung on to their lead until they were caught on the last end for a tie at 14-all.

 

Rex Beard with Linda Lane and J Trimingham led 5-2 on the sixth, were caught 5-all on the seventh but recovered the lead and held it until the twelfth when they were caught 9-all.  The opposition then got control of the closing ends, leaving Whitstable defeated 16-20.

 

Norman Crawford with Norman Tilley and Fiona Hallows trailed along for the first few ends but were level at 4-all on the seventh.  By the tenth they had fallen to 4-9 and they stayed behind until they finally lost at 12-17.

 

Mike Doyle with Janette Crawford and Christopher Middle won the first end but they were 1-12 down on the seventh.  By the thirteenth they had scored a few shots and were 9-13 but it was too late to change the outcome, they lost 10-20.

On Sunday 13 August the challenge came from seven mixed rinks from Belvedere bowling club who were defeated by six rinks to one and overall by 144-79 shots.

 

 

John New with Mike Brain, Debbie Doyle and Ian Palmer went from 1-4 on the third end to 16-4 on the eleventh. They then increased their rate of scoring, going on to win 34-6(six).

 

Trevor Epps with Rhiannon Turner, Norman Tilley and Dave Elliot led 13-1 on the eighth end and 15-2 on the eleventh.   By the fifteenth they were 20-3 ahead and they finally won 24-6(six).

 

Norman Crawford with Janette Crawford, Nicholas Newman and Bob Webb were pretty much nip and tuck during the first half and were level at 6-all on the ninth.  They got a ‘five’ on the eleventh and another on the fifteenth which helped toward their winning total at 24-11.

 

Brian Watson with Sandra Williams, John French and Martin Markey conceded just one shot in the first half, leading 9-1 on the ninth end.  They remained in control, winning 19-10.

 

Tracy Hamilton with Rex Beard, P Saltwood and Jim Hatton dominated the first half, leading 7-1 on the sixth end and 9-5 on the ninth.  From 12-5 on the tenth they experienced a succession of blank ends to be 12-14 down on the fifteenth, fortunately they got all the last three ends 16-14.

 

Nelson Hamilton with Mike Doyle, Michael Blaquiere and Barbara McGillicuddy lost the first two ends and scored only twice in the first half to be 3-9 down on the ninth.  They then got the next five ends to lead 10-9 on the fourteenth.  They were level on the next at 10-all, then won 13-11.

 

Norman Toby with John Taylor, Jude Garland and Sally White were level at 5-all on the sixth end and 9-all on the halfway ninth.  They led 10-9 on the next but were behind on the fourteenth at 10-17 before losing the last three ends and the game 14-21

On Thursday 17 August, in a round of the Ladies Heron League, two triples of ladies from Boughton bowling club came to the Castle green where the host club won on both rinks and overall 30-19.

 

Maggie Dellard with Sally White and Tracy Hamilton led 9-1 after six ends, having scored a ‘five’ on that end.   By the thirteenth they were 16-4 in front, then stopped scoring for the last five ends.  They were fortunate to have shots in reserve, enabling them to win 16-10.

 

Barbara McGillicuddy with Linda Lane and Chris Murphy were 4-0 up on the fourth end but then were caught 4-all on the sixth.  They pulled away for the next few ends only to be caught again on the fifteenth at 9-all.  Undaunted, they took all the last ends to win 14-9.

On Wednesday 16 August six mixed triples traveled to play against Civil Service Bowling club where they won on one rink, lost on four with one tied.  Overall they lost 75-116.

 

Brian Gentle with John Noble and Irene Fairall were 2-5 down on the seventh end and 3-10 adrift by the tenth.  Taking the next six ends, they led 15-10 on the sixteenth before winning at 16-11.

 

Ray McDonald with Colin Chapman and Martin Hakes lost the first three ends 0-3 and then were level at 4-all on the seventh.  They were 4-8 behind on the ninth then got a ‘six’ on the tenth to lead 10-8.  They stayed in front until the seventeenth at 16-12, then the home side levelled again on the last end, resulting in a tie, 16-all.

 

Maggie Dellard with Ian Palmer and Keith Dellard were 2-5 down on the fourth end and 5-11 on the ninth.  Over the next few ends they gradually began to catch up, 10-12 on the fourteenth but they fell back again to lose at 12-19.

 

Brian Reynolds with Martin Markey and Janette Crawford began well and were leading 7-3 on the seventh.  They failed to score again for half a dozen ends to be 7-16 down on the thirteenth and they finally lost at 12-20.

 

Norman Crawford with John French and Daphne Ellinor trailed 1-5 on the third end but drew level on the sixth at 5-all.  They fell behind again and continued thus, losing 13-23.

 

John New with Norman Tilley and George Cook lost the first three ends 0-3 and had their closest approach on the fifth at 2-3 after which they got the occasional shot until they lost 6(six)-27.

Whitstable Bowling club Match Reports 15 August 2023

 

 

 

Boughton bowling club was the next Forest of Blean League encounter, on Tuesday 1 August when Whitstable’s team of six triples of men won on one rink, lost on four with one tied.

Overall they lost 82-109 and they gained one-and-a-half league points.

 

 

Brian Watson with Nick Newman and George Cook began well, leading 8-0 on the sixth end.  They then got a ‘seven’ on the eighth to go 15-1 ahead. They coasted through the second half to win at 21-10.

 

Scott Wilson with Trevor Epps and Brian Reynolds were evenly matched in the first half (a pointer to what was to come) and were just in front on the ninth at 11-9. They went to 16-9 on the twelfth but were caught 16-all by the fourteenth and they actually achieved a tie at 19-all.

 

Mike Amura with John New and John Taylor were 5-8 behind on the seventh then failed to score for about half a dozen ends to be 5-18 down on the thirteenth.  They managed to double their score but that was not enough to avoid losing 10-19.

 

Keith Dellard with Martin Markey and Norman Crawford were  1-9 down on the fifth end and never looked like catching up.  They lost 11-21.

 

Don Minnett with Martin Hakes and Gareth Porter were 0-12 down on the eighth end.  Over the second half they did rather better but still lost 8-17.

 

Nelson Hamilton with Keith Patching and Dave Elliot were  ten shots behind on the ninth end at 6-16 and finally lost 12-28.

A friendly match was played against Rayleigh bowling club on Thursday 10 August when they sent seven mixed rinks to do battle on the Castle green where the host club won on all the rinks and overall 157-86.

 

 

Dave Elliot with Mike Doyle, Tracy Hamilton and Barbara McGillicuddy lost the first end but were level at 3-all on the fourth.  By the thirteenth they led 28-3 and went on to win comfortably 32-9.

 

Ray McDonald with Penny Smith, Christopher Hallows and Bob Webb conceded just one shot in the first seven ends to lead 11-1.  By the eleventh end they were 21-3 ahead and they gently coasted to victory at 25-12.

 

Maggie Dellard with Fiona Hallows, Jude Garland and Martin Hakes took the first five ends 10-0 and they kept a substantial lead throughout the game, finishing with a ‘five’ and winning 24-15.

 

Keith Dellard with Colin Chapman, Sally White and John New also had a productive opening spell,  leading 7-0 on the fourth end.   They led 22-7 on the thirteenth and they too won 24-15.

 

Norman Crawford with Jo Bridges, Mike Brain and Christine Murphy took the first five ends unchallenged to lead 8-0.  By the ninth they led 15-3 and ran out winners at 21-13.

 

Brian Reynolds with Irene Fairall, Christopher Middle and Ian Palmer also won the first five ends unchallenged to lead 5-0.  They were 7-4 ahead on the ninth, finally winning 15-9.

 

Brian Watson with Norman Tilley, Janette Crawford and John French were 2-1 up on the second end, 2-4 down on the fourth then led 5-4 by the sixth.  The visitors got a ‘five’ on the next which was a bit disheartening but they buckled down to the task and after twelve ends were only a shot behind at 10-11.  They dropped back again to trail 10-14 on the fourteenth and were 14-15 down on the seventeenth then they took the last end to win by a single shot at 16-15.

Whitstable Bowling club Match Reports 8 August 2023

 

 

On Tuesday 25 July six triples of men from Canterbury Bowling club came to the Castle green for another round of the Forest of Blean League.  The host club won on two rinks and lost on three with one tied.  Overall they lost 89-125, receiving two and a half league points.

 

Nelson Hamilton with Keith Patching and Dave Elliot were 2-8 down on the sixth end but by the ninth they were level at 8-all.  On the next end they went ahead at 10-8 and they hung on to win at 20-18.

 

Scott Wilson with Trevor Epps and Brian Reynolds led 3-1 on the third end but dropped behind 3-6 on the sixth.  They levelled on the seventh at 6-all but dropped back again on the ninth to 6-10.  Levelling again at 10-all on the eleventh they then took the lead which they held on to until they finally won by a single shot at 16-15.

 

Mike Amura with PJ O’Reilly and John New were well down on the eighth end at 3-11.  A  ‘Six’ on the tenth put them equal at 11-all.  They fell back again for four ends to be 12-15 down on the fourteenth.  They then got a ‘five’ on the next to lead once more, 17-15 and they eventually achieved a tied finish at 20-all.

 

Brian Watson with Nick Newman and Martin Hakes led 6-1 after only four ends but then failed to score for another five ends to trail 6-13 on the ninth.  They doubled their score in the second half but not enough to avoid defeat at 13-24.

 

Don Minnett with Christopher Middle and Brian Gentle lost the first two ends 0-2 and were 2-5 down on the fifth.  They took the lead on the ninth, 8-7 but fell back again on the next at 8-11 and thereafter scored only a few times, losing 11-22.

On Sunday 23 July five mixed triples from Crayford bowling club came to the Castle green where the host club won on just one rink, lost on four and overall lost 64-80.

 

George Cook with Ken Gilmore and Yvonne Taylor were 0-3 down on the third end, levelled on the fourth, 3-all and eighth, 5-all before taking the lead on the tenth at 8-7 and going on to win 18-12.

 

Brian Reynolds with Mavis Birch and M Pritchard were nip and tuck for most of their game: 3-all on the fifth end, 4-all on the seventh, 9-all after thirteen, 11-all by the sixteenth and finally losing the game by a single shot at 13-14!

 

Norman Toby with Jan Dooley and Jude Garland trailed 1-5 on the fifth end but eventually got in front on the thirteenth at 9-8.  They went behind again on the next and finally lost 12-14.

 

Brian Watson with Sheila Upjohn and Mike Brain scored infrequently and after twelve ends had accumulated just four shots at 4-16.  On the next they got a  ‘six’ and broke into double figures.

They finally lost 13-20.

 

Nicholas Newman with Sally White and John Taylor failed to score for the whole of the first half, finally getting off the mark at 1-15 on the ninth.  They were much more productive in the second half but it was all too late; they lost 8-20.

Another round of the Forest of Blean League was played away against Herne Bay bowling club on Tuesday 18 July.  The Whitstable team of six triples of men won on just one rink and lost on five.  Overall they lost 77-91, picking up just one league point.

 

 

Nelson Hamilton with Keith Patching and Dave Elliot led 3-1 on the fourth end but by the ninth they were a shot behind at 6-7.  They then took most of the remaining ends to win 17-9.

 

Mike Amura with PJ O’Reilly and Keith Dellard were evenly matched over the first half dozen ends to be 3-all on the sixth.  The opposition then got a ‘five’ leaving the visitors trailing 3-8 on the eighth and by the twelfth they were well behind at 7-17.  They seized the next five ends, drawing level on the seventeenth at 17-all before losing by single shot at 17-18.

 

Don Minnett with Norman Crawford and Gareth Porter dominated the first half, leading 7-3 on the ninth.  They then went from 8-4 on the eleventh to 8-9 after fifteen before losing 10-12.

Brian Watson with Nick Newman and George Cook were 2-6 down on the fifth end and 4-6 on the seventh.  By the eleventh they lagged 4-13 behind and went on to lose 10-18.

 

Martin Hakes with Martin Markey and John New started well enough leading 7-2 on the sixth end but then they stopped scoring for half a dozen ends to be 7-16 on the twelfth.  A ‘five’ on the fifteenth put them in touch at 14-16 but they lost the last few ends and finished 14-20 down.

Whitstable Bowling club Match Reports 25 July 2023

 

 

On Wednesday 19 July Deal bowling club sent six mixed triples to play a  ‘friendly’ match on the castle green.  The host club won on two rinks and lost on four and by 83-110 overall.

 

Brian Watson with Ken Gilmore and Karen West lost the first three ends 0-3, were 2-5 down on the sixth but took the lead on the ninth at 6-5.  They were level on the eleventh at 7-all and again on the fifteenth at 10-all then won the last three ends, winning the game 15-10.

 

George Cook with Joan Davey and Deborah Doyle had a good start, leading 9-1 on the seventh end but six ends later they were caught up with on the thirteenth at 11-all.  They won 16-13.

 

PJ O’Reilly with Ken Scott and Andrea Lippett were neck and neck for the first half: 4-all on the fourth end, 5-all on the sixth and 8-all on the tenth.  Then after a brief lead on the eleventh at 9-8 they fell steadily behind until they finally lost 12-17.

 

Mike Amura with Angie Amura and John French arrived at the halfway ninth well behind at 2-11.  They did a lot better in the second half but it was too much; they lost 9-18.

 

John Taylor with Penny Smith and David Lane faced opponents who got ‘five’ on the third and on the sixth ends leaving them 4-11 down on the sixth.  They got their own ‘five’ on the eighth to go 10-11 and then they caught up on the eleventh at 13-all and then they began to build a lead, getting to 18-13 on the thirteenth.  Sadly they stopped scoring while the visitors took the last five ends, including another ‘five’ and a ‘six’ leaving the home side defeated 18-27.

 

Brian Reynolds with Jan Dooley and Ian Palmer lost the first five ends 0-13 and though they had a few good ends they lost 13-25.

 On Saturday 22 July six mixed triples traveled to play against Ramsgate bowling club to play another round of the Catherine Wheeler league.  They lost on all six rinks and overall 73-99.

 

Maggie Dellard with Mike Doyle and Martin Hakes won the first end 3-0 but by the sixth had been caught 5-all.   After leading 6-5 on the next they fell behind again to 6-9 on the tenth, 8-9 on the twelfth and then failed to score again for five ends to be 8-14 down on the seventeenth.  They got a ‘five’ on the last end but it wasn’t quite enough; they lost by a single shot at 13-14.

 

Brian Watson with Daphne Ellinor and Martin Markey were 4-1 on the third, 4-all on the fifth and 9-7 on the ninth end.  After levelling at 9-all on the next they trailed behind until losing 15-19.

 

Don Minnett with Penny Smith and Dave Elliot were 1-4 on the fourth, 2-6 on the seventh and 3-9 on the halfway ninth.   A ‘five’ on the tenth helped them to get the lead on the twelfth at 10-9, but it was short-lived and they lagged behind until they lost 12-17.

 

Keith Dellard with Nelson Hamilton and Barbara McGillicuddy were neck and neck for the first half of the game and were ahead 8-4 on the ninth.  They were caught 10-all on the fourteenth before losing 12-19.

 

Rosemary Field with Linda Lane and Trevor Epps lost the first six ends 0-9 and reached the halfway point 2-12 adrift on the ninth.  By the thirteenth they were 3-16 down and lost 8-17.

 

Mike Amura with Tracy Hamilton and Christine Murphy were 2-11 down on the eighth end then got a ‘five’ on the next, 7-11 which was encouraging but proved to be a false dawn; they scored only three more ends, losing 13-23.

Whitstable Bowling club Match Reports 18 July 2023

 

 

On Tuesday 4 July six triples of men played against six teams from Faversham Bowling club, sharing rink honours at three apiece, but Whitstable won overall 111-93.

 

Scott Wilson with Trevor Epps and Brian Reynolds dominated play throughout this game; they lost the first end but by the ninth led 15-3.  They won 31-6( six).

 

Ray McDonald with Martin Markey and Peter Boeg also lost the first end but by the eighth they led 13-1.  They eventually won 20-11.

 

Mike Amura with PJ O’Reilly and Keith Dellard were 1-4 down on the fourth but by the eighth they led 15-4.  They stayed in front until they won 24-17.

 

Don Minnett with Norman Crawford and Gareth Porter were evenly matched with level scores a frequent occurrence: 2-all on the fourth, 4-all on the sixth, 8-all after eleven ends and 11-all by the fourteenth.  Equal again at 14-all on the seventeenth they then lost the last end and with it the game by a single shot at 14-15.

 

Brian Watson with Colin Chapman and Dave Elliot were level on the third end at 2-all, on the eighth at 5-all and 8-all on the eleventh.  After that they fell back steadily to lose 10-20.

 

Nelson Hamilton with Keith Patching and Martin Hakes led 5-3 on the seventh end but then trailed 5-13 after twelve.  They scored three more times but still lost 12-24.

On Thursday 13 July six mixed triples traveled to play against Herne Bay bowling club in another round of the Catherine Wheeler league.  Each club won on three rinks but Whitstable won overall at 109-102 and received eleven league points against six.  

 

Don Minnett with Tracy Hamilton and Brian Reynolds had a poor start; after five ends they were down 2-8.  They then took the next eleven ends, 26-8 on the sixteenth before winning 26-12.

 

Brian Watson with Keith Patching and Daphne Ellinor were 7-3 up on the sixth end, level on the ninth at 7-all and then behind on the eleventh at 7-10.  By the fifteenth they had caught up again at 12-all then they won all the last three ends, winning the game 19-12.

 

Gareth Porter with Maggie Porter and Barbara McGillicuddy were level on the sixth at 5-all, on the eighth at 6-all and again on the tenth at 7-all.   They dropped back on the next to 7-11 but then caught up once more to be 13-all on the fourteenth and going on to win by a single shot at 18-17.

 

Maggie Dellard with PJ O’Reilly and Keith Dellard were 2-10 down on the sixth end, which seemed a big step to climb, and so it proved; they lost 13-17.

 

Ray McDonald with Mike Amura and Christine Murphy led 9-4 on the sixth end and stayed in front until they were overtaken on the fifteenth at 18-19.  They scored only once more, losing 19-24.

 

Rosemary Field with Nelson Hamilton and Martin Hakes were on a par on the fifth end at 4-all but soon fell behind, they were 4-15 on the eighth, and never looked like catching up.  Lost at 14-20.

On Saturday 15 July six mixed triples from Whitstable played six mixed triples from St Lawrence bowling club, losing on all six rinks and overall by 65-131 shots.

 

Dave Elliot with Janette Crawford and John Taylor were 2-6 down on the sixth end but then they nearly caught up on the ninth at 6-7.  They eventually caught up on the sixteenth at 13-all but then lost the last two ends, and the game at 13-15.

 

Keith Dellard with M Doyle and Yvonne Taylor were also 6-7 down on the ninth end but they never got close to catching up; they lost 15-18.

 

Maggie Dellard with Norman Tilley and John Noble were 3-4 down on the fourth end descending to 3-9 down on the sixth.  They were 7-9 behind on the ninth but scored only one more time before losing 8-19.

 

John New with M Pritchard and Barbara McGillicuddy were 6-1 up on the third end and 7-3 after five.  However, they then failed to score again for seven ends, lying 7-16 on the twelfth.  They finally lost 11-24.

 

Brian Watson with Kathy Curtis and Peter Boeg arrived at the halfway ninth having scored only four shots, 4-12.  They went one better in the second half before losing 9-23.

 

Rex Beard with Irene Fairall and A Cliff were 1-15 down on the eighth end and then scored just occasionally thereafter until they lost 9-30.

On Wednesday 28 June five mixed triples from Ramsgate bowling club met five from Whitstable who won on two rinks but lost on three; Overall they won 74-67.

 

Ray McDonald with Norman Tilley and Christine Murphy led 6-0 on the third end and 9-1 by the seventh.  They continued their dominance until they won 23-5(five).

 

Tracy Hamilton with Nelson Hamilton and Ken Scott had a low-scoring first half: 2-all on the fourth, 9-3 on the ninth but it picked up in the second until they won 18-9(nine).

 

Martin Hakes with Mike Brain and Martin Markey led 4-1 on the fourth end, were matched 4-all on the fifth and by the sixth were 4-8 behind.  They came closest to catching up on the twelfth at 10-11 but then slipped back until they lost 13-16.

 

Brian Reynolds with M Doyle and John French went 1-5 down on the fourth, 3-11 on the eighth and finished the first half at 7-11 on the ninth.  By the fourteenth they were 7-16 behind and they finally lost it all at 10-18.

 

Norman Crawford with David Lane and Dave Elliot were behind 0-8 on the fifth and 4-9 down on the ninth.  After fifteen ends they were still on ‘four’, at 4-18. They lost 10-19.

On Thursday 29 June there was a ‘friendly’ away match against Chislet bowling club that Whitstable won by four rinks to one with one tied and overall at  118-65.

 

Ray McDonald with John French and Martin Hakes lost the first two ends 0-2 but then went on to win the game at 32-4(four),  which defies description.

 

Gareth Porter with Brian Gentle and Maggie Porter were only slightly less dominant; they were 15-0 on the eighth end, 19-4 on the twelfth and victorious at 27-6(six).

 

Brian Reynolds with Fi Hallows and Bob Webb got off to a good start, were caught on the seventh at 4-all but pulled away to be well in front on the tenth at 12-4.  They didn’t score for the next half dozen ends and were nearly caught on the sixteenth at 12-10, but fortunately they won all the last few ends, winning 14-10.

 

Maggie Dellard with Norman Tilley and Keith Dellard were 7-1 up on the sixth end and 11-2 ahead on the eighth.  They were in front 15-6 on the tenth but were caught on the seventeenth at 17-all but happily took the last end, winning by a single shot at 18-17.

 

 

George Cook with Norman Crawford and Christine Murphy lost the first end 0-1 but soon grabbed the lead and hung on until caught 8-all on the tenth.  It was neck and neck from there until they reached a tied finish at 15-all.

 

Brian Watson with Christopher Hallows and Ken Scott were 2-9 down on the seventh but closed up to 7-9 behind by the tenth.  They never caught up, losing 12-13.

On 1 July Whitstable bowling club took on six mixed rinks from Springhouse bowling club, winning on four rinks, losing on two and winning overall 99-96.

 

Ray McDonald with Rex Beard, Andrea Lippett and Norman Toby went 1-6 down on the fifth end and they didn’t catch up until the sixteenth at 16-13 before winning 19-14.

 

Martin Hakes with Linda Lane, Karen West and George Cook were 6-1 ahead on the third end, scoring a ‘five’ on that end.  They led 11-3 on the seventh and progressed to victory at 17-12.

 

PJ O’Reilly with Norman Tilley, Christopher Hallows and Yvonne Taylor were evenly matched in the first half and were level on the tenth at 6-all.  By the thirteenth they led 14-6 and they went on to win 16-13.

 

Keith Dellard with Fiona Hallows, Ken Gilmore and Irene Fairall led 15-2 on the seventh and 17-3 on the ninth.  They then experienced seven ends without scoring, to be level at 17-all on the sixteenth and they were fortunate enough to win by a single shot at 19-18.

 

Norman Crawford with Jo Bridges, Sally White and Peter Boeg had a reasonably successful first half leading 8-3 on the ninth; but by the twelfth they were 8-15 down before losing 15-17.

 

Brian Reynolds with Janette Crawford, John Nichols and John New led 3-0 on the third end, 3-all on the next and 4-all by the sixth.  On the halfway ninth they had fallen behind to 6-13 and they trailed along until they lost 13-22.

Another round of the Catherine Wheeler League, fought between mixed teams of triples was contested on 5 July by Whitstable bowling club and Broadstairs bowling club with Whitstable winning on five rinks to one, overall 120-82 and receiving fifteen league points to two.

 

Scott Wilson with Penny Smith and Brian Reynolds took the first seven ends 19-0.  By the thirteenth they were way ahead at 22-5, at which point they stopped scoring but were sufficiently in credit to win 25-10.

 

Maggie Dellard with Bob Webb and Dave Elliot were level-pegging after seven ends at 7-all.  They fell back on the tenth at 8-11 but a couple of ‘sixes’, on the eleventh and fifteenth helped them on to victory at 25-16.

 

Ray McDonald with PJ O’Reilly and Christine Murphy lost a couple of ends at the start but by the ninth led 11-4.   They were caught 11-all on the thirteenth but took the last five ends to win 20-11.

 

Mike Amura with Keith Dellard and Barbara McGillicuddy were neck and neck for the first half, level at 3-all on the fourth, 5-all on the seventh and 6-all by the ninth.  Their fortunes varied in the second half; a ‘five’ on the eleventh put them ahead 11-8, by the fourteenth they were level again at 12-all and they fell behind on the next at 12-13.  They scored well on all of the last few ends, winning the game 20-13.

 

Don Minnett with Tracy Hamilton and Gareth Porter got a ‘five’ on the second end to go 6-0 up and made steady progress, 7–2 on the fourth, 9-8 after ten and drawing level at 12-all by the fourteenth.   They had the best of the last four ends, winning 18-15.

Rosemary Field with Nicholas Newman and Norman Crawford conceded just one shot in the first dozen ends: they were 26-1 ahead.  They relaxed their grip toward the finish, winning 30-9(nine).

 

Mike Amura with Trevor Epps and Barbara McGillicuddy led 15-1 on the seventh end; by the twelfth they led 16-6 and were 20-6 on the sixteenth before winning 21-7.

 

Brian Watson with Keith Patching and Daphne Ellinor were 6-9 down on the sixth end but by the eleventh they were 16-9 ahead.  They had the best of the last few ends, winning 23-14.

On Wednesday 14 June seven assorted rinks from Duke of Kent bowling club were beaten seven rinks to nil and overall 153-84.  The games were played over eighteen ends.

 

Brian Gentle with John Taylor, Keith Dellard and Ray McDonald got a ‘seven’ on the third end which gave them an early boost at 8-1 and by the eleventh they led 19-5.  They took the last three ends with a ‘six’, a ‘seven’ and a ‘three’ to win 36-8(eight).

 

Mike Amura with Janette Crawford, Ian Palmer and Ken Gilmore were 4-1 up on the fourth and 10-3 by the halfway ninth then got all but three of the second half ends, winning 21-6(six).

 

Don Minnett with Mavis Birch, Ken Scott and Jude Garland led 6-1 after six ends, 6-4 on the next and 23-4 by the thirteenth, on which end they got a ‘six’.  They scored just one more time but they had enough in reserve to win 24-14.

 

Norman Toby with I legible, Fiona Hallows and Norman Crawford were behind for almost all of the first half, scoring on only two ends and trailing 4-10 on the ninth.  A ‘five’ on the next signalled a welcome change, they won all but three of the second half ends, winning 18-13.

 

Bob Davey with Christopher Hallows, Joan Davey and Keith Patching were 1-4 down on the fourth end but caught up on the ninth at 8-all.  A ‘five’ on the next launched a winning streak that took them to victory at 22-18.

 

Brian Watson with Martin Markey, D Doyle and Nicholas Newman were level on 4-all on the sixth end but got in front 8-5 on the ninth.  They were level again on the twelfth at 11-all and on the sixteenth at 14-all before taking the last two ends to win 16-14.

On Thursday 15 June five mixed triples from Hythe bowling club defeated five from Whitstable bowling club who lost two rinks to three and overall 82-90.

 

Mike Amura with Angela Amura and Dave Elliot got a ‘five’ on the third end and another on the fifth towards a lead of 16-0.  They made few mistakes on their way to winning 28-8(eight).

 

Keith Dellard with Norman Tilley and Yvonne Taylor were ahead 9-0 on the sixth end and advanced to 12-2 on the ninth. They scored only three times after that but still won 15-9.

 

Brian Watson with Linda Lane and M Doyle won the first three ends 3-0 but were caught 3-all on the fifth and dropped back to 5-11 on the ninth.  They stayed behind until finally losing 16-21.

 

Maggie Dellard with John Taylor and David Lane began well, leading 6-1 on the fourth but soon fell behind, 8-13 on the ninth.  A ‘five’ on the fourteenth gave some hope at 16-18 but they still lost at 17-27.

 

Norman Crawford with Irene Fairall and Nicholas Newman were 1-7 down on the fifth and 3-14 on the ninth.  They scored only twice more, losing 6-25.

Wednesday 21 June was the occasion of a defeat suffered by six mixed triples away to New Romney bowling club by two rinks to four and overall at 78-100.

 

John Taylor with I legible and Janette Crawford were 3-5 down on the sixth end but a ‘five’ on the next gave them a lead which they kept until the sixteenth at 13-all and they won 15-13.

 

Nicholas Newman with Norman Tilley and J Coleman were 2-7 down on the seventh end and stayed behind until they scored on the thirteenth end, 11-9 and hung on to win 13-12.

 

Norman Crawford with Christopher Middle and Yvonne Taylor were 0-5 down on the fourth end and 2-10 adrift by the ninth.  They were more successful in the second half but still lost 13-15.

 

G Cook with Mavis Birch and M Doyle led 5-3 on the fifth end but then had five losing ends on the bounce to be well behind at 5-18 on the tenth.  They made a valiant attempt at recovery but finally fell short of victory at 17-20.

 

Keith Dellard with G Thompson and Martin Markey were 2-10 down on the seventh end and 5-15 behind on the eleventh.  They lost 12-19.

 

Brian Watson with Irene Fairall and John French scored just three times in the first half to be 3-13 down on the ninth.  They got to 8-16 on the thirteenth before losing 8-21.

On Tuesday 27 June two triples of ladies traveled to Sandwich bowling club where they won on both rinks, one by an enormous margin, the other by the smallest.  Overall they won 55-30.

 

Barbara McGillicuddy with Angela Amura and Chris Murphy won the first dozen ends to lead 26-0 including a ‘seven’ on the fifth. They finally won 38-4( four).

 

Maggie Dellard with Linda Lane and Janette Crawford lost the first three ends and were 2-3 down.   They exchanged the lead a number of times until they drew level on the sixteenth at 14-all. They had the better of the two remaining ends, winning by a single shot at 17-16.

Five mixed rinks from Grays bowling club came to the Castle green on Saturday 24 June where, over fifteen ends, they left the host club defeated by one rink to four and overall 54-87.

 

Keith Dellard with Jo Bridges, David Lane and Trevor Epps were evenly matched in the first half, arriving at the halfway ninth level at 7-all.  They kept their noses just in front until the twelfth when they were leading 10-9, then they took all the last few ends, winning 16-9.

 

Maggie Dellard with Ann French, Dawn Hammond and Norman Tilley went 3-5 down on the fifth end and were still no further on by the ninth at 3-11.  They finally lost 10-17.

 

Dave Elliot with John Nichols, Rhiannon Turner and Yvonne Taylor won the first two ends but it was down-hill from then on.  2-0 became 2-5 on the fourth end and 4-7 on the sixth drifted to 4-11 by the eighth and so it went on until defeat at 10-20.

 

Norman Crawford with Christopher Hallows, Janette Crawford and G Thompson led 3-1 on the third end but soon trailed 3-9 after five.  Shots were hard to come by and they lost 9-19.

 

Brian Watson with Fiona Hallows, Patricia Vaz and G Cook were 2-4 down on the sixth end but led 9-4 on the ninth.  Sadly they stuck there until they finally lost 9-22.

On Tuesday 20 June six triples of men traveled to Canterbury to play another round of the Forest of Blean League, where they lost by one rink to five and overall at 72-115.

 

Scott Wilson with Trevor Epps and Brian Reynolds lost the first two ends 0-2, levelled at 3-all on the fifth and ended the first half at 8-5 on the ninth.  In the second half they steadily built a score until they finally won at 17-13.

 

Mike Amura with PJ O’Reilly and John New went 2-7 down on the fifth end but got into the lead at 10-8 on the eleventh.  They were caught on the thirteenth at 10-all then fell behind until they led again on the seventeenth at 16-14 but to no avail, they lost on the last end at 16-17.

 

Don Minnett with John Taylor and Gareth Porter won the first two ends 2-0 but were 3-11 down on the ninth.  They doubled their efforts in the second half but still lost 9-17.

 

Brian Watson with Nick Newman and Keith Dellard were 1-7 down on the fourth end and 3-10 adrift by the eighth. They continued in the trail until they finally lost 10-17.

 

Ray McDonald with Peter Boeg and Brian Gentle were neck and neck in the first half and were level at 5-all on the eighth end.  Thereafter they fell further and further behind until losing 11-23.

 

Nelson Hamilton with Keith Patching and Norman Crawford had a bad day out,  they were 1-7 down on the sixth end and 3-14 by the ninth.  They lost 9-28.

Another round of the Forest of Blean League was played on Tuesday 27 June against Boughton bowling club, a men’s triples competition.  Whitstable won on three rinks and lost on two with one tied.  Overall they won 91-86 and the league points were five and a half against two and a half.

On Friday 30 June two triples of ladies from Ramsgate bowling club met two from Whitstable in a Heron League round.  The Whitstable team lost on one rink and tied on the other.  Overall they lost 25-30 and were awarded one league point; Ramsgate received five.

 

Maggie Dellard with Linda Lane and Chris Murphy were level on the sixth end at 4-all but by the ninth had sunk to 4-10.  They eventually caught up on the sixteenth at 15-all, then shared the last two ends to tie at 16-all.

 

Tracy Hamilton with Maggie Porter and Andrea Lippett led 3-0 on the third end, were level at 3-all on the fifth and dropped back to 3-8 on the eighth.  All though they did better in the second half they still lost 9-14.

Whitstable Bowling club Match Reports 27 June 2023

 

Another round of the Catherine Wheeler League was contested against six mixed triples from Ramsgate bowls club on Saturday 17 June.  Whitstable won by four rinks to two and 99-94 overall, recieving thirteen league points to four.

 

Rosemary Field with Nicholas Newman and Norman Crawford lost the first end but then led 10-1 on the seventh.  They maintained their grip on the game, winning 19-9.

 

Brian Watson with Keith Patching and Daphne Ellinor were generally just in front for most of the first half but fell behind on the tenth at 9-10.  Their fortunes changed with a ‘six’ on the fourteenth, 17-13, and they finished with a ‘five’ on the last end, winning 23-15.

 

Don Minnett with Penny Smith and Dave Elliot were dominant in the first half, leading 10-3 on the ninth.  They were close to being caught on the twelfth at 10-8 but then they ran away with the next five ends to lead 18-8 on the seventeenth and to victory at 18-10.

 

Ray McDonald with Mike Amura and Tracy Hamilton exchanged the lead a couple of times in the first half but were level at 8-all on the halfway ninth end.  They had better luck in the second half and finally won 18-14.

 

Keith Dellard with John Taylor and Barbara McGillicuddy had the best of the first half and were in a comfortable position leading 12-7 on the ninth end. Four ends later they trailed 12-19 and they eventually lost 16-22.

 

Maggie Dellard with Nelson Hamilton and Brian Gentle went 1-9 down on the seventh end and they never recovered, losing 6-24.

In a Heron League fixture on Tuesday 20 June two triples of ladies from Birchington bowling club were thoroughly beaten by two similar teams from Whitstable by two rinks to nil and 34-25 overall.

 

Maggie Dellard with Deberha ? and Chris Murphy led 6-2 on the fifth end, were equal on the eighth at 7-all and 16-7 on the twelfth thanks in part to a ‘five’ on the tenth. Finally won 20-14.

 

Rosemary Field with Maggie Porter and Barbara McGillicuddy held the lead in a low-scoring first half to be ahead 7-4 on the ninth end.  They doubled their total to win 14-11.

Whitstable Bowling club Match Reports 20 June

 

On Tuesday 13 June seven mixed rinks from Petts Wood were beaten by five rinks to two and overall at 127-106 in what was described as a ‘friendly’ match.

 

Ray McDonald with Colin Chapman, Janette Crawford and Andy Matthews were 2-all on the fourth end but they got a boost from a ‘five’ on the next to lead 7-2.  The visitors then replied at once with another ‘five’ to level the score at 7-all.   By the eleventh they were down at 11-13 but got another ‘five’ on the twelfth, 16-13 and then took most of the remaining ends to win 24-14.

 

Keith Patching with Jo Bridges, Ken Scott and Ian Palmer led 6-2 on the fourth end, having got a ‘five’ on that end.  They were 9-3 on the sixth, 12-5 by the eighth and 19-6 after twelve ends; and there they stopped scoring for five ends and were nearly caught on the seventeenth at 19-17.  Fortunately they resumed control, taking the last two ends and winning the game 24-17.

 

PJ O’Reilly with Angela Amura, Christine Murphy and Dave Eliot lost the first end but after five were in command at 4-1.  It was a low-scoring match, they were only 6-5 on the halfway ninth and they didn’t get to double figures until they got a ‘five’ on the thirteenth to lead 13-7.  They then went on to win at 18-11.

 

Nelson Hamilton with Nicholas Newman, Mavis Birch and David Lane had a poor start and were down 3-11 by the ninth end.  They then staged a remarkable recovery, taking all but two of the ends in the second half to win 20-14.

 

Rosemary Field with Norman Tilley, Ken Gilmore and Brian Watson were 1-5 down on the fourth end but drew level on the seventh at 5-all.   They dried up for the next four ends, to trail 5-14 on the eleventh.  They too enjoyed a remarkable reversal of fortune, taking all but one of the last seven ends, winning by a single shot at 17-16.

 

Norman Crawford with Linda Lane, Joan Davey and Martin Markey led 3-1 on the third end but then were 3-5 down on the fifth before levelling on the seventh at 5-all. The two teams were neck and neck from then on until the home side lost by a single shot at 14-15.

 

Brian Reynolds with Irene Fairall, Christopher Middle and Mike Doyle lost the first four ends 0-6 then followed along behind until they lost the last four ends and lost the game 10-19.

On Saturday 3 June six mixed rinks from Watford bowling club were beaten by four rinks to two and overall by 114-73.

 

Brian Watson with Fiona Hallows, Keith Dellard and Peter Boeg were ahead at 8-2 on the sixth end.  On the ninth they led 9-4 and by the fourteenth they were well in front at 20-4.  They finally won at 25-7( seven).

 

Norman Crawford with Maggie Porter, David Lay and Tracy Hamilton were 14-3 up on the eighth end and this set them up for a win at 25-9.

Barbara McGillicuddy with Irene Fairall and Andrea Lippett had a good start, running up a big lead at 12-1 on the sixth and including a ‘seven’ on the third end.  (Had they known, they had scored enough shots to have won already) They led 16-3 on the ninth and went on to win 28-11.

Maggie Dellard with Yvonne Taylor and Chris Murphy lost the first four ends 0-4 but they levelled on the sixth at 4-all and took the lead on the eighth at 7-6.  By the twelfth they led 17-6 and went on to win 35-12.

A Catherine Wheeler League match, on Tuesday 6 June gave victory over Westbrook bowling club’s to Whitstable’s six mixed triples at four rinks to one with one more tied; overall 126-99 and fourteen league points to three.

 

Gareth Porter with Maggie Porter and Don Minnett led 10-1 on the sixth end, were 20-5 ahead on the eleventh and finally won 26-12.

 

Ray McDonald with Mike Amura and Christine Murphy opened proceedings with a ‘six’ on the first end.  They were 16-2 in front on the sixth and 19-4 on the ninth.  In the second half they got stuck for five ends on ‘21’ but had enough in reserve to win 25-15.  

 

Maggie Dellard with Nicholas Newman and Nelson Hamilton opened with a ‘four’ and were 13-7 ahead on the halfway ninth end. On the thirteenth they got a ‘six’, 21-10, then they too got stuck on ‘21’ for five ends but also were far enough ahead to win 23-17.

 

Brian Watson with PJ O’Reilly and Daphne Ellinor were leading 5-3 on the fifth end when their opponents got a ‘seven’ on the next, 5-10 and began to catch up until they were two shots behind on the tenth at 9-11 but the Westbrook team scored a  ‘five’ on the eleventh, 9-16 and it took another four ends to get in front on the fifteenth at 19-18 and they went on to win 22-21.

 

Scott Wilson with Penny Smith and Tracy Hamilton led 5-3 on the fifth end but fell back to 5-14 on the ninth. After fighting back they were level on the fifteenth at 14-all before achieving a tied score at 17-all.

 

Martin Hakes with Barbara McGillicuddy and Norman Crawford were 2-11 down on the sixth end and 4-12 behind on the ninth.  They started the second half with a  ‘five’, 9-12 but it fizzled out as they lost at 13-17.

Another reasonably successful meeting between teams of two triples of ladies from Whitstable and Canterbury Bowling clubs in the Heron League on Wednesday 7 June resulted in a win for Whitstable at 43 shots to 34 overall and 4-2 in league points.

 

Maggie Dellard with Yvonne Taylor and Chris Murphy lost the first four ends 0-4 but they levelled on the sixth at 4-all and took the lead on the eighth at 7-6.  By the twelfth they led 17-6 and went on to win 35-12.

 

Tracy Hamilton with Linda Lane and Barbara McGillicuddy won the first two ends 4-0, were 4-all on the third and 14-8 on the ninth.  They were then a shot behind on the thirteenth at 14-15 but drew level on the next at 15-all and again on the seventeenth at 18-all.  They lost the last end and with it the game at 18-22.

Thursday 8 June saw six mixed rinks from Pleasaunce Vets bowling club arrive on the Castle green where rink honours were shared three apiece but overall the host club narrowly  lost 87-90.

 

Ray McDonald with Ann French, Christopher Middle and Brian Gentle led 4-3 on the fifth end but extended their lead to 8-3 by the ninth.  They were caught 8-all on the eleventh but then got all but one of the remaining ends to win 20-9.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Whitstable Bowling club Match Reports 6 June 2023

 

On Wednesday 24 May six mixed triples from Woodlands Park bowling club beat the host club by four rinks to two.  The hosts lost overall 94-99.

 

Brian Watson with John French and Daphne Ellinor led 6-1 on the fourth end and maintained their grip throughout.  Reaching the thirteenth at 12-7 they won all the last four ends winning 22-7.

 

PJ O’Reilly with John Taylor and Patricia Vaz were 1-4 adrift on the fifth end but got in front on the eighth at 6-4, only to be caught on the tenth at 6-all.  They were neck and neck for the rest of the game: 9-ll on the thirteenth, 10-all after fifteen and 11-all by the seventeenth.  They took the last end to win by a single shot at 12-11.  

 

Norman Crawford with Angela Amura and Yvonne Taylor led 5-1 on the fifth but then were 5-8 behind on the tenth.  They managed to get in double figures before losing 13-15.

 

Ronald Vaz with Jo Bridges and Kenneth Scott were 10-0 up on the fifth end but then were caught 11-all on the twelfth.  They got  the lead back with a ‘five’ on the next at 16-11 but then lost the last five ends and the game at 16-18.

 

Mike Amura with Irene Fairall and Ken Gilmore lost the first three ends and were 2-13 down by the seventh.  They almost got on terms on the thirteenth at 14-15 but went on to lose 18-22.

 

Brian Reynolds with Mavis Birch and Penny Smith led 5-0 on the third end but they were soon overtaken, 5-6 on the sixth, 7-19 on the eleventh and finally losing 13-26.

On Tuesday 30 May two triples of ladies played two from Herne Bay bowling club in another

 round of the Heron League, winning  on both rinks and by 39-26 overall.  They gained six league points.  

 

Tracy Hamilton with Karen West and Chris Murphy seized the initiative and the first four ends to lead 10-0.  After eleven ends they were 17-3 in front and they went on to win 21-11.

 

Maggie Dellard with Jo Bridges and Barbara McGillicuddy led 9-4 on the fourth end but were nearly caught on the seventh at 9-8; they were eventually caught on the thirteenth at 13-all. They had the best of the remaining ends, I winning 18-15.

On Saturday 27 May Dane Park bowling club’s five mixed Reynolds with Mavis Birch and triples were the opponents and they were defeated by four rinks to one and overall at 80-68.

 

Brian Reynolds with Rhiannon Turner and Christopher Hallows led 7-2 on the fifth end, were nearly caught on the seventh at 7-6 but recovered to lead 16-7 after thirteen ends and eventually won 19-10.

 

G Cook with Jo Bridges and David Lane dominated the first half, leading 10-3 on the eighth end.  They came their closest to being challenged on the thirteenth at 13-11 but held on to win 19-14.

 

Andy Matthews with M Doyle and Sally White had a poor start, being 2-6 down on the sixth end.  They were still behind on the fifteenth at 11-13 but managed to win more of the last few ends and so they finally won 16-14.

 

Peter Boeg with Bob Webb and Yvonne Taylor were 1-5 down on the sixth end but levelled on the tenth at 6-all.  They were level again on the thirteenth at 8-all and the fifteenth at 9-all before falling behind on the seventeenth at 11-12 but then took the last end to win by one shot at 13-11.

 

Brian Watson with Sandra Williams and Nicholas Newman went 1-7 down on the fourth end and stayed behind until they drew level on the fifteenth at 13-all.  Sadly they lost the last three ends and with them the match at 13-18.

On Wednesday 31 May six  mixed triples from Birchington bowling club came to the Castle green for another round of the Catherine Wheeler league.  The host club won on two rinks and lost on four.  The host club was awarded 4 league points, the visitors collected thirteen.

 

Dave Eliot with Barbara McGillicuddy and Ronald Vaz lost the first two ends but by the sixth led12-2. Their lead was cut to 12-9 on the ninth but was restored by the thirteenth at 18-9.  They went on to win 22-13.

 

Martin Hakes with Penny Smith and Nicholas Newman led 8-2 on the fifth end and 10-8 by the halfway ninth. On the fifteenth they were 17-12 in front, then lost the last three ends but were victorious in the game  by a single shot at 17-16.

 

Ray McDonald with Mike Amura and Christine Murphy went from 3-0 on the second end to 3-9 by the seventh, then 4-15 after twelve. They crept into double figures but still lost 13-18.

Whitstable Bowling club Match Reports 23 May 2023

 

On Tuesday 2 May Whitstable Bowling club had its first Forest of Blean league (FOB) match against Faversham bowling club, a competition for triples of men.  Whitstable lost on four rinks and tied on two.  Overall they lost 74-114.

 

Gareth Porter with PJ O’Reilly and Trevor Epps were 4-1 up on the third end, then caught on the sixth at 4-all.  They resumed the lead on the next and by the ninth led by one at 7-6.  They extended their lead to 14-6 after twelve ends but then stopped scoring, to be level on the sixteenth at 14-all.  They shared the last two ends to tie 15-all.

 

Bob Davey with Andy Matthews and Norman Crawford were 5-1 ahead on the fifth end but then fell behind on the eighth at 5-6.  They equalised, 6-all on the ninth, and advanced to 12-6 on the twelfth.  They led 14-11 on the sixteenth but lost the last two ends to tie 14-all.

 

Brian Gentle with Peter Boeg and Ray McDonald were evenly matched in the the opening ends and by the seventh were 5-all.  Two ends later they has doubled their score, leading 10-5 on the ninth.  By the fifteenth they held a commanding seven-shot lead at 15-8 only to see it wiped out by their opponent’s getting ‘fives’ on the sixteenth and eighteenth ends, thus inflicting defeat by two shots at 16-18.

 

Brian Watson with Ronald Vaz and G Cook took the first seven ends to lead 9-0, but after eleven they trailed 9-15 and they went on to lose 12-20.

 

Don Minnett with Keith Patching and Martin Markey led 5-3 on the sixth end but then fell back to 5-8 on the tenth.  They scored on just three ends of the second half, losing 9-26.

 

Mike Amura with John New and Nelson Hamilton were 1-5 down on the fourth end and 5-8 behind on the ninth.  They scored only twice in the second half, losing 8-21

On Sunday 14 May seven mixed triples from Civil Service Bowling club came to the Castle green where the host club won on two rinks and lost on five, losing overall by 81-117.

 

Peter Boeg with PJ O’Reilly and Jo Bridges were 1-4 down on the fourth end but improved to 7-4 by the seventh.  Over the rest of the ends they extended their lead until they finally won 19-11.

 

Ray McDonald with Yvonne Taylor and Mike Brain lost the first three ends 0-3 but caught up on the fifth at 3-all,  they were level again on the eighth at 5-all and at 6-all on the tenth.  They fell behind on the twelfth at 6-8 but then got a ‘six’ on the next to lead 12-8.  From then on it was neck and neck until they won by a single shot at 16-15.

John New with Christine Murphy and Norman Crawford won the first three ends 3-0, were caught 3-all on the sixth but held the lead on the eighth at 6-3.  They were caught 7-all on the thirteenth, levelled again on the fifteenth at 8-all and finally lost 9-11.

 

Nicholas Newman with Mavis Birch and Norman Tilley were 4-all after seven ends but slipped behind to 4-17 by the eleventh.  They improved over the last few ends but still lost 12-23.

 

Norman Toby with Ken Gilmore and Irene Fairall led 5-2 after six ends but were equalled on the next at 5-all.  Five ends later they were 5-14 down on the eleventh and eventually lost 9-18.

 

Brian Gentle with Christopher Hallows and Jeanette Crawford went 2-9 down on the fifth end and never came near catching up.  They lost 7(seven)-23.

On Tuesday 16 May ladies from Whitstable bowling club played a rink, a triple, a pairs and a singles game against ladies representing Kearsney bowling club in the Womens Top Club competition.  They won the triple but lost the rest.

 

Barbara McGillicuddy with Linda Lane and Chris Murphy were 2-7 behind on the fifth end but got on terms at 9-all on the tenth.  They were challenged on the fifteenth at 11-all but hung on to win by a single shot at 14-13.

 

Tracy Hamilton played the singles match and began well, leading 5-0 on the second end and 14-1 by the sixth.  She led 18-4 on the eleventh but five ends later was still on ‘eighteen’ at 18-8.  She then got stuck on ‘nineteen’ for eight ends, and being caught 19-all on the twenty-third end she finally lost when her opponent got to ‘twenty-one’ first on the 26th end, 20-21.

 

Daphne Ellinor with Jo Bridges, Patricia Vaz and Rosemary Field were 8-2 up on the fifth end and progressing to 12-6 on the ninth.  They had a good lead on the sixteenth at 16-10 but their opponents got a ‘six’ and then a ‘three’, thus inflicting defeat at 16-19.

 

Maggie Porter and Penny Smith played the pairs match, beginning well at 8-1 on the fifth end.  By the ninth they were level at 9-all and it was neck and neck until they lost 14-18.

On Wednesday 17 May six triples of ladies took part in a Womens’ Triples competition match against six similar triples from Herne Bay bowling club.  Each club won on three rinks and lost on three.  Overall Whitstable lost 99-106.

 

Tracy Hamilton with Cathy Curtis and Karen West were evenly matched in the first half: 1-all on the second end, 3-all on the fourth, 7-6 after eight; then level again on the tenth at 8-all and 10-all on the twelfth.  They took all but one of the last few ends to win 18-11.   

 

Barbara McGillicuddy with Joan Davey and Deborah Doyle were similarly evenly matched, winning the first two ends 2-1 but being equal on the ninth at 7-all.  They were 10-all on the fifteenth then got a ‘six’ on the seventeenth, 18-10 but had their winning margin cut when their opponents also got a ‘six’ on the last end, but Whitstable went on to win 18-16.

 

Rosemary Field with Fiona Hallows and Irene Fairall  had the upper hand for the first half, leading 10-6 on the ninth end.  They then failed to score on the next five ends, dropping to10-21 after fourteen.  They got all of the last four ends but were too late, losing 18-21.

 

Daphne Ellinor with Sue Quilter and Yvonne Taylor were 2-7 down on the fourth end but then went 8-7 ahead on the seventh.  By the ninth they were behind again 8-10 on the ninth, then 11-17 on the thirteenth before losing 17-20.

 

Chris Murphy with Angela Amura and Jo Bridges went 1-8 down on the fifth end and never got near catching up; they lost 13-24.

On Thursday 18 May six mixed triples did battle with six from Boughton bowling club in yet another round of the Catherine Wheeler league, sharing rink honours at three apiece.  Overall they won at 100-95 and were awarded eleven league points.

 

Scott Wilson with Maggie Porter and Nelson Hamilton had a poor start; they lost the first two ends 0-4 and by the sixth trailed 2-7 but they caught up on the tenth, levelling at 7-all.  They then won all but one of the last eight ends, winning the game 24-9.

 

Ray McDonald with Mike Amura and Christine Murphy were 2-5 down on the fifth end but levelled on the next at 5-all and again on the halfway ninth at 7-all.  They were far more successful in the second half, winning the game at 19-12.

On Tuesday 9 May another round of the Catherine Wheeler League, against Thanet bowling club, six mixed triples representing each club. Whitstable won on two rinks and lost on four. Overall they lost 97-115.  They were awarded four of the seventeen league points available.

 

Scott Wilson with Penny Smith and Norman Crawford lost the first end, 0-1 but levelled 2-all on the third and by the ninth led 10-2. After thirteen ends they were 12-8 ahead and they won all of the remaining ends, winning 22-8.

 

Don Minnett with Tracy Hamilton and Martin Hakes were level on 2-all on the third but dropped behind 2-10 on the sixth. A ‘five’ on the seventh gave them a boost at 7-10 but they were still behind on the thirteenth at 10-18 after which they won all the rest of the ends, winning the match by a single shot at 19-18.

 

Ray McDonald with Nicholas Newman and Christine Murphy led 6-1 on the fourth end but were caught 7-all on the seventh.  They took the lead for a few ends until levelling again, at 11-all on the eleventh end followed by going to 13-all on the thirteenth!  They held the lead on the fifteenth at 15-13 but then lost the last three ends and with them the game at 15-20.

 

Brian Watson with Nelson Hamilton and Daphne Ellinor were 2-6 down on the fourth end and 5-10 adrift by the ninth.  A ‘five’ on the fourteenth gave their second half score a better look, but they still lost 16-23.

 

Bob Davey with Keith Patching and Rosemary Field scored on only a few of the first half ends to trail 7-14 on the ninth.  They kept up the same rate of scoring in the second half, losing 13-21.

On Saturday 13 May six mixed triples from Whitstable bowling club played another round of the Catherine Wheeler league against six similar teams from Walpole Bay Bowling club; they won by 4-2 in rinks and overall 121-100.  They were awarded thirteen league points.

 

Scott Wilson with Maggie Porter and Nelson Hamilton led from the start; they were 8-3 up on the fifth end and 12-5 on the ninth.  They got another twenty shots in the second half, winning 32-11.

 

Brian Watson with PJ O’Reilly and Daphne Ellinor lost the first two ends 0-6 but retaliated with a ‘five’ on the third and levelled on the fourth at 6-all.  By the ninth they were 11-8 ahead and went on to win 20-14.

 

Tracy Hamilton with Nicholas Newman and Mike Amura took the first four ends, 7-0 and by the ninth they led 11-4.  On the eleventh they were ahead 15-4 but then had a lean spell and were nearly caught on the fifteenth at 15-13; however they got the last three ends to win 19-13.

 

Ray McDonald with Linda Lane and Martin Hakes lost the first end 0-3 but then took the next three, including a ‘five’ on the fourth to lead 9-3.  Losing the next four ends they were very nearly caught up on the eighth at 9-8 but stayed in front until winning by a single shot at 18-17.

Gareth Porter with Trevor Epps and Christine Murphy scored just twice in the first half to be 4-13 adrift on the ninth end.  They were 9-15 on the twelfth, then lost the last six ends and also the game at 9-23:

Whitstable Bowling club Match Reports 9 May 2023

 

On Wednesday 6 May two triples of ladies defeated two from Faversham Bowling club convincingly by two rinks to nil and overall by forty-nine shots to eighteen.

 

Tracy Hamilton with Barbara McGillicuddy and Chris Murphy took the first five ends 12-0 and led 14-3 on the ninth. They then won all but one of the second half ends, winning 28-4(four).

 

Rosemary Field with Penny Smith and Patricia Vaz lost the first two ends 0-2 but got  a ‘five’ on the next, 5-2 and by the halfway ninth led 12-6.  They kept control of the game, winning 21-14.

Whitstable Bowling club Match Reports 2 May 2023

 

The new season began on Wednesday, 26 April with a clear victory for the two triples of ladies who constituted the Heron League teams over two teams from Chislet bowling club.

 

Maggie Dellard with Patricia Vaz and Chris Murphy led 8-2 after five ends and remained in control to lead 30-3 on the sixteenth.  They finally won 30-8

 

Tracy Hamilton with Penny Smith and Maggie Porter won the first end, opening with  a ‘seven’ and by the fifth led 12-1.  They were ahead 17-2 on the tenth and went on to win 25-8.

 On Thursday 27 April six mixed triples took on six from Broadstairs bowling club in the first round of the Catherine Wheeler League, winning on three rinks and losing on the other three.  Overall they lost 88-100.

 

Bob Davey with Tracy Hamilton and Martb Hakes had a low-scoring first half, being all square at 6-all on the halfway ninth.  They did rather better in the second half, leading 13-6 on the thirteenth end and going on to win 19-10.

 

R McDonald with Keith Patching and Daphne Elinor were 2-7 down on the fifth end but levelled on the seventh at 7-all.  The sides were well balanced until they got a ‘six’ on the fifteenth to go ahead 17-12 and then to win 19-16.
